Collies are a beautiful, medium to large size breed that many adore. They have a long, beautiful, flowing coat of hair. Usually your male breeds have thicker hair then your females. You will want to brush your Collies at least two to three times a week or more if needed to prevent clumping or knotting. Your Collies shed quit a bit as well, and brushings will assist with lowering the amount of hair shed.. Bathing them on a regular basis will also assist with lowering the hair shed through out your home.
Collies usually weigh about 50 to 80 pounds and grow approximately 26 inches tall. As with most breeds your male Collies are going to be bigger then your females. The Collies are wonderful therapy dogs, faithful companions’, as well as good herding dogs.
Collies are very protective pets, and will be loyal to the person they spend the most time with in the family, but also be protective of the whole family especially if you have children that will interact with him or her. They are very alert about the things that go on around them and a well know breed of assistant/service dogs. Collies love to talk, it is important for them to look for strangers or even strange noises. You can try to train them not to bark so much, but they may still bark.
Exercise is important for your Collies as with most other breeds. They are active and like to play so walking your Collie every day is good for them even though they may have a large yard. Some of the games they like to play are hide-n-seek, tug-of-war, they like to fetch, fly ball, and obedience is fun and healthy for your Collie.
Collies are very sweet and loving dogs. They are smart and intelligent they are ready to make a change when they disappoint you. Collies learn very quickly with patience and kindness. Collies are very loyal and affectionate. You will want to show them a lot of love. They really enjoy that. Carry some treats with you while walking your Collie. This will help with them not to pull to much while on the leash and this will help keep their attention on you.
Most Collies need something to do if left out side. They get very lonely when by them selves, so will want tons of attention when you return. It is nice to be wanted or needed as much as your Collie will feel towards you. Collies love people and other dogs, and love plenty of attention form both friends and strangers alike.
Your Collie will learn as you teach them and training any new pet when they are young will assist in the training process. Socializing your pet at a young age will help as well with training your young pet and as your pet gets older this will also assist you when taking them in public places such as a park or to the lake for the weekend.
