When we think of the Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie) we picture a cute little dog in a pink purse at the side of a Hollywood regular. The social site of a cute little head peeping out the top of a designer bag, adorned in her little pink bow. But lets face it how many of us actually know their history? Did you know Yorkshire Terriers helped fight in World War II? Well… ok at least Smokey did.
Found by an American soldier in an abandoned fox-hole, then later sold to William Wynne during a poker game, this little Yorkie became Wynn’s unofficial war dog. She backpacked through war dangling fearlessly from Wynn’s pack near his machine guns. Smokey warned Wynn of incoming shells while hunkered down in foxholes (and we think sit is an outstanding trick for a puppy). She was even credited with twelve combat missions and awarded eight battle stars.
Smokey’s outstanding acts paved the way for a new found love of this breed during World War II, pushing many to covet the terrier intelligence. Those who love the breed still hold true dedication to the small yet loyal companion. Yorkie’s today reap the benefit of the well deserved spoils from their owner. The dedication from this breed is truly evident in Smokey’s drive to keep Wynn from danger and proves this breeds strongest asset is devotion. Â
