Choosing a Boston Terrier

This is a breed that has been developed in the USA. and was the first American breed accepted by the American Kennel Club, classified as part of the Non-Sporting Group.

The Boston Terrier stands fifteen to seventeen inches tall and these dogs weigh fifteen to twenty-five pounds. This breed has a square skull, short muzzle, and their short tails can be straight or corkscrewed. The coat on a Boston Terrier is short and smooth, the colors can be brindle, seal, or black, with white markings. The white markings are found between the eyes, around the chest and front legs

The Boston Terrier is a highly intelligent breed, it is a friendly dog who rarely meets a person it doesn't like, This breed is known for its high energy, and slightly boisterous behavior. The Boston is great with children but can be on the rough side as a puppy, something that may call for supervision. Getting the Boston into puppy classes is very beneficial, at this young age, without them your puppy could get board and get into mischief. Your Boston Terrier will quickly master basic commands. Boston Terriers love to perform for a crowd because the pay off for them is lots of attention.

Boston Terriers can thrive in an apartment setting, but you may want to have a daily set time for walks to help relieve some of this breeds high energy. Also a fenced in back yard would not hurt. If your little guy misses his daily exercise don’t be surprised if he bounces off the walls the next day, especially if he is still a puppy.

Boston Terriers do suffer from a few health problems, this breed is prone to deafness, hypthyroidism, bad knees, heart murmers, cataracts, this breed also may have a weakened immune system especially when they are under six months of age. This weakened immune system can lead to a serious condition of Demodectic mange, it is non contagious but results in bald spots. Most dogs do however grow out of this condition with treatment, but there are some that never recover and do have to be euthanized.

The Boston Terrier does not need to be groomed more than once a week, but if he does develope Demodectic mange you will need to give him a bath daily and take him to a vet frequently for treatment.

If you don’t mind a breed that may need a little more work than others, but do want the joy and entertainment that a BostonTerrier can bring to your life this is the breed for you.
