Designer Breeds

I have recently seen and heard of a lot of different designer breeds, pugapoo, maltipoo, lhasapoo, morkie, yorkipin, yorkypoo and I am very confused as to what breed of dogs these are. And the list just gets bigger and bigger every day. Does anyone know if these designer breeds have any characteristic problems or do they have the tendencies of what breed they are being mixed with. I have seen a few of these cute little mixes and wow are they adorable, but how many different ones can there be without hurting the pure breed down the road. I am not a vet or a specialist in this catagory so I dont know but if anyone can tell me anything about all this mixing I would love to hear it.

The second dog.

Buying a Second Dog

If you are a dog lover, you may feel that one dog is not enough. However, before you add a second dog to your household, there are a few important points you should consider.

First, you may want to consider your dog's nature. If your beloved pet is a bit of a bully and the new dog isn't submissive, there are going to be some major battles before they sort out which dog is in charge. Sometimes, two dogs are equally dominant and these battles flare up again and again. By the time you visit your veterinarian for the fourth or fifth time to have their battle scars treated, you may be regretting the purchase of a second dog.

Raw Diet

I have been reading a lot about the raw diet and have read a lot about the controvercy, there are those that believe it is the best thing for your pets and then you have the ones that think it is bad for your pets. I understand where both sides are coming from and believe that it all boils down to what you believe is best for your pet. If you try the raw diet and you see improvment in your pet than by all means continue. If there is no difference than stop, what I am trying to say is when you love your pet it becomes like a child, and who knows better what our children need than the parents. Raising pets is a learning experience and a lot of trial and error.

Over Eating Dog

Over Eating Dog and what you can do about it.

Allowing your dog to overeat can lead to serious medical issues. Here’s everything you need to know about this behavior problem.

Defining the Problem

A dog’s eating habits can be easily compared to that of a teenage boy’s. Most dogs, like most teenage boys, will eat anything and everything that is put in front of them. When a dog is fed dog food at mealtimes, table scraps at breakfast and dinner, and treats in between, you may have an Overeating Dog on your hands.

Dogs lack the impulse control necessary to limit the amount they eat. Unfortunately, this behavior is more than an annoyance. Canine obesity is a widespread problem caused by overeating and under-exercising. Weight gain can quickly spin out of control, especially for older and more sedentary dogs.

Choosing a Collie

Choosing a Collie,

When you say Collie you think of Lassie, this strong graceful breed is excellent with children, which makes it a great breed for a family dog.

The Collie can get into quite a lot of mischief as a puppy so you should consider obedience classes, it is easier to train a puppy that has no bad habits than it is to train an adult dog that has. A Collie can take his role as a protector of your family quite seriously and bark at anything that he may consider an intruder. That instinct comes from his past roll as a sheep herding breed.

Collies loves to spend time outside so it would probably not be a good pet for apartment living, a home with a large yard would be the ideal surroundings for this breed.

Should You Buy a Miniature Pinscher?

Should You Buy a Miniature Pinscher?

If you love the sleek, muscled appearance of the Doberman Pinscher, but you don't want a big dog, you may want to consider a Miniature Pinscher. These dogs are very similar in appearance to Dobermans, but are almost one hundred pounds lighter. The Miniature Pinscher may look like a miniature Doberman, but these dogs are not actually directly related. In fact, the Miniature Pinscher was developed long before the Doberman. The Miniature Pinscher was created by breeding the German Pinscher to a smaller breed. The American Kennel Club classifies the Miniature Pinscher as a part of the Toy Group, but these dogs are not cute little lapdogs. The Miniature Pinscher was bred to be a tough, aggressive ratter. The Min Pin weighs in at 8 to 10 pounds and stands 10 to 12 inches high. Miniature Pinschers have a compact, muscular frame. Their intelligent eyes are so dark brown that they look black. The Min Pin's short coat can be red, stag red, black and rust, or chocolate and rust. This breed's tails are docked. In addition, some people crop their Miniature Pinscher's ears, but this is not necessary. Most of these dogs develop pricked ears as they mature.

Dog Heroes: All Time Heroes

Dog Heroes: All Time Heroes

Everyday, people witness countless acts of heroism, big and small. Heroes, too, come in different shapes and sizes, forms and breeds, man and animals alike. Dolphins, seals, horses, cats and whales are just a few from the animal kingdom that display tremendous protective instincts that save man from all sorts of danger. But nothing beats “the man’s best friend”.

After displays of great courage and bravery during World War I, dogs have seen in a different light. They were thrust into the limelight unknowingly. Since then, dogs have been called all time heroes – recognized, rescued, trained and cared for by man. All kinds of awards were given to dogs to celebrate their heroism and saving prowess such as the “Dog Hero of the Year Award.”

Dog Training - Crate Training Pros and Cons

Dog Training - Crate Training Pros and Cons

Debate continues unabated about whether or not crate training dogs is healthy or harmful.

'Crating' involves placing a pet in a cage, usually plastic or metal of roughly the size of the dog, for a period of time during the day or night.

Proponents argue that crating gives the dog a sense of 'property', a place it can call its own. In this little home within the home, the dog feels safe surrounded by familiar smells and objects. Here, the dog can retreat from fearful noises or boisterous children.

Those who favor crate training assert that potty training is much easier when combined with use of a crate. Dogs, they say, will naturally avoid soiling their 'den' and 'hold it' until they're released to go outside.

How to pick a good Local Veterinarian

How to pick a good Local Veterinarian

One of the most important decisions you will make in this process is choosing your veterinarian. If, like most of us with pets, you treat them like your child, his or her health and well being will be of utmost importance to you. You should be willing to spend some time in researching the subject and we would recommend visiting several practices before you make your decision. Ideally, you should conduct your research before you get your animal so that any of his health needs can be addressed immediately.

Pick a veterinarian who you feel comfortable with, and who answers your questions in full, completely and gives you answers you can understand. You don't need a vet who talks down to you, or acts like you're too dumb to understand what they're saying!
