Australian Cattle Dogs

Also known as the Blue Heeler, the Australian Cattle Dog will weigh between 35 to 45 pounds when full grown. This breed is not recommended for apartment life, as they require a lot of vigorous exercise and may become destructive if confined. Their coat is straight and short. They require weekly brushing to keep shedding under control. Australian Cattle Dog puppies are intelligent, protective and affectionate. They can do well with children if socialized early, though they are not recommended for families with cats or other pets. They can exhibit dominant tendencies, so they are not recommended for first time dog owners.

Australian Cattle Dogs For Sale

As you may be able to guess by the name, the Australian Cattle Dog is a type of dog that is used for herding. This dog first came about in Australia and was used only for controlling cattle. However, it is not unheard of for Australian Cattle Dogs to actually control other forms of livestock. This dog is only about medium size, so a lot of people like to know how this dog can control an animal that is about ten times its size. The Australian Cattle Dog is able to do this pretty easily, because it nips the backs of the heels of the cows. Not only that, but cattle dogs are suppose to be small and low to the ground. When a cow gets bit on the leg, it likes to kick up its back legs. Since the Australian Cattle Dogs are low to the ground they avoid getting kicked in the face. So really, their small size is for their own safety.
