AI: Artificial insemination.
Agility trials- An organized competition at which dogs negotiate a series of obstacles and jumps in three classes of increasing difficulty. Suffix titles are earned at each level (Novice, Open, and Excellent) by qualifying a predetermined number of times.
Alleles- One member of a pair or series of genes that occupy a specific position on a specific chromosome.
American Kennel Club (AKC) - An organization, established to adopt and enforce uniform rules regulating and governing purebred dogs events; to regulate the conduct of persons interested in exhibiting, running, breeding, registering, purchasing, and selling dogs.
Artificial Insemination - The introduction of semen into the female reproductive tract by artificial means.
Association- An organized body of people who have an interest, activity, or purpose in common.
Best in Show - The only animal left undefeated at the end of all judging on that day.
Best of Breed-Dog selected by the judge as the best representative of a particular breed on that day.
Bitch- A female canine
Booking Fee - A fee charged for reserving an amount of time for stud services. This fee is usually non-refundable
Breeder- A person who breeds animals
Breeds- A variety of animal with consistent traits
Brood Bitch - Female dog (bitch) used for breeding.
Championship- A title conferred on an animal after meeting requirements. A thoroughbred Eclipse award winner.
Clubs- An organization formed for the meeting of breeders for discussion and education or activities pertaining to their breed.
Coat-The hair covering. Most breeds have two coats: an outer coat and an undercoat
Conformation- The form and structure, make and shape; arrangement of the parts in conformance with breed standards
Co-owners - One or more individuals recorded in the records as the registered owner of an animal.
Cross Breed- An animal whose parents were purebreds of different breeds.
Dam- The female parent.
Discipline- Controlled behavior resulting from disciplinary training.
Futurity (dog) - A competition for young dogs that requires a series of nominations and associated fees prior to the date on which the Futurity is judged. These stages usually consist of nomination of the bitch after she is bred, nomination of the litter after it is whelped, and/or nomination of individual puppies from the litter.
Gaited- The pattern of footsteps at various rates of speed, each pattern distinguished by a particular rhythm and footfall
HYPP - (Hyperkalemic periodic paralysis) A muscle disease found in some breeds.
(N/N = Tested negative for the disease. H/H = Tested positive for the disease. N/H = carries one gene from the disease and one normal (non-infected) gene).
Handler- Person other than an the owner or co-owner, designated by the owner or co-owner of an animal to be the handler of, and the person responsible for, the animal at most times.
In Whelp - Pregnant.
Litter- The puppy or puppies of one whelping.
Megabyte- A unit of computer memory or data storage capacity.
Microchip- A rice-sized device encoded with a unique and unalterable number. The chip is implanted just under the skin in the scruff of the neck and is read by a scanner.
Mixed Breed- An animal of unknown gene pool or offspring of 2 crossbreeds
Mutt- Dog as a result of mixed or random breeding.
Neuter- To castrate
Non-Profit- Not seeking or producing a profit or profits
Pedigree- The written record of an animal\'s genealogy of three generations or more.
Puppy- A dog under 12 months of age
Pure Bred- Any animal descended from a line of ancestors of the same breed. Not necessarily registered.
Random Breed- An animal of unknown gene pool or offspring of 2 crossbreeds
Register- To record with the proper authorities an animal's breeding particulars
Registration #- A unique number provided to the individual or breeder when registering an animal.
Sire- The male parent
Spay- To remove a bitch's ovaries to prevent conception
Stud- Male animal used for breeding
Stud Fee- A charge associated with the act(s) being preformed for the stud service.
Stud fee- Payment made for the services of a stud dog.
Suitability- The quality of having the properties that are right for a specific purpose.
Tattoo- A permanent, indelible mark used to identify the horse
Veterinarian- One who performs medical or surgical treatment on animals
Whelp date- The date of birth of a litter
Whelping- The act of birthing puppies
