Dog Breeds

Some facts about "man's best friend"

With little or no evidence, one can only speculate how and when dogs first made contact with humans and co-existed with them over the centuries. The fact remains, that various dog breeds have indeed been around for thousands of years. Pre-historic rock carvings, inscriptions, statues, ancient temples and monuments, all bear witness to this. However, so far as official Dog Breeds, there is solid evidence on hand with the first documentation of pedigrees in 1873, when the English Kennel Club was established. Here are a few answers to questions that all dog lovers, like you, may ask.

What is a Dog Breed?

In generic terms, this is a domestic dog, bred from a species or stock and specifically chosen and nurtured by humans. A dog breed is also from a group that shares visibly similar features and behavioral characteristics. It is natural for dogs of one dog breed to reproduce with other dogs of the same breed.

Is a purebred dog different?

There is indeed a fine difference in that such a breed of dogs, although similar in appearance and traits, have evolved from a specific group of ancestors that shared the same characteristics. With the use of genetic analysis or recorded ancestral data, a dog can be confirmed as purebred. In the absence of such (ancestral) proof, confirmation of specific purity of dog breeds cannot be relied on.

How did Dog Breeds evolve?

Since early times, even today, non-domestic dogs (or pariahs), are usually found near human habitation, fend for themselves and reproduce within their group. Such dogs do not have any working dog functions or any other specific qualities, e.g., hunting, live stock, guarding homes, etc. As the demand, for breeding and training of dogs to perform grew, various species evolved over the years to meet the demand. In this manner, a new breed of dogs emerged, e.g., German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, etc. More recently, some dog breeds were also acquired for their unique appearance and other distinct characteristics. All this resulted in the development of a vast number of different dog breeds, from the working to the show type. In addition to function, there are also descriptive classifications such as small dog breeds, toy, rare, large and mixed dog breeds. When searching for the right puppies for sale, it is important to understand lineage and pedigree is the dog will be shown.

Why are dogs cross bred?

Whether by accident or design, cross breeding is a process that has led to the creation of various dog breeds. This is generally carried out between two different dog breeds, or, two dog types within one specific breed. Creating a breed of dogs to perform a particular type of work, or for marketing, are some of the main objectives of cross-breeding.

Which Dog Breeds are popular?

There are virtually hundreds of dog breeds, each in varied sizes, shapes and colors. Some popular breeds include German Shepherds - A breed that had its origins in Germany about a century ago. Pomeranians - A cheerful little breed of dog, popular as a lap dog at home. Golden Retrievers - A breed that was initially developed in England during the mid nineteenth century. Dachshunds- A home dog breeds of European origin, initially bred for hunting rabbits and foxes.
