American Bulldogs

American bulldogs are a beautiful representative of the bulldog family. This particular type was initially bred to be a working class dog that was good at catching livestock and protecting their master's property. As descendants of the English bulldog, they have been bred to preserve the strong, stout body of their descendants, but with a taller frame and longer legs. You can recognize the American bulldog by the square head and face with a slightly snubbed nose which can occasionally make them resemble the white boxer.

In the United States the original bulldogs were considered to be working dogs which farmers used around the farm to perform a variety of tasks. After the end of World War II the breed came dangerously close to being extinct. A war veteran decided to keep the breed going so he began carefully breeding the American bulldogs and keeping strict records on appearance and health. He also kept the breed as a working class breed. With years of dedication to resurrect the breed, the American bulldog is no longer in danger of becoming extinct.

They are described as powerful animals utilizing their strongly muscled bodies and well-knit frames. Most males grow to a height of up to 27 inches, though some have been recorded as much taller. Female bullies can range anywhere from 20 to 25 inches. All can range in weight from 60 to 125 lbs or more. Though most American bulldogs tend to be white, there are some variations of color, including brindle or even patches which can be any shade of brown. These patches can cover up to 90% of the body and they sometimes have black spots on the skin of their undersides.
