Chihuahua Dog Breed Facts

The Chihuahua is the smallest dog in North America, measuring between 6 and 9 inches and weighing between 2 to 10 pounds. Named after the Mexican state Chihuahua, they are believed to have originated there in the late 1800s, although there is speculation they were brought over by the Chinese. The UK Kennel Club and the American Kennel Club dog organization recognizes two breeds of Chihuahua: the long-haired, who does not require trimming and only minimal dog grooming, and the smooth-haired, who sheds more than the former. Both types of Chihuahuas should be bathed about once a month. Chihuahuas are good dogs for apartment life and do not need to be outdoors much. They are not tolerant to cold climates and require a coat when the weather is cool. Chihuahuas are considered good companions, but can become startled easily and nip small children. Chihuahuas tend to lavish their affections on one person as opposed to the entire family, and they can become jealous and protective.

Chihuahuas are known for their courageous and affectionate nature. They are strong-willed dogs and can be difficult to house train. Chihuahuas tend to prefer the company of their own breed, and should be socialized early on to avoid aggressive behaviour when placed in the presence of other breeds. Overly aggressive Chihuahuas must be taught early on to curb hostile tendencies. This breed is known for attacking animals more than twice their size which can result in injury or, at times, death.

Teacup Chihuahua

"Teacup Chihuahua" is a term used for smaller Chihuahuas, usually weighing about 2 pounds. Extremely small Chihuahuas often suffer from various health problems are prone to seizures. The Chihuahua Club of America does not endorse the use of this term and issued a statement saying that terms such as "Teacup, Pocket Size, Tiny Toy, Miniature or Standard" are not recognized types of Chihuahuas and are often used to "entice prospective buyers into thinking that puppies described in this way are of greater monetary value... the use of these terms is incorrect and misleading". Chihuahuas

Chihuahua have short nasal passages and are prone to snoring and wheezing, in addition to gum and eye problems such as glaucoma. Chihuahuas should be fed lightly with dog pedigree, as they gain weight easily, which can lead to joint problems and a shortened life span. Chihuahuas Puppies are normally born with large heads which can result in birthing problems, so many deliveries require Cesarean sections preformed by skilled and reputable veterinarians. Chihuahuas are the only breed of dong born with an incomplete skull. The soft spot in the back of their head is called a molera, and it normally takes about six months for the area to fill in. Despite their size, Chihuahuas do require daily exercise and can exhibit behaviour problems if left inactive for long periods of time. Their life expectancy is about fifteen years.
