Popular Breeds
Maltipoos
The Maltipoo (also referred to as a Maltepoo, Malta-doodle, Maltapoo and Moodle) is not a pruebred, but rather a hybrid, bred from purebred Maltese and Poodle parents. The Maltipoo is one of the more popular hybrid dogs, often referred to as a "designer dog" by breeders and hybrid enthusiasts. Like Poodles, Maltipoos vary in colour and size, ranging from 8-15 inches and weighing between 6 - 15 pounds. While Maltese are fairly standard in appearance, Poodles are not, which can make it difficult to predict the outcome of a Poodle/Maltese breeding. Because both the Maltese and Poodle are considered light shedders, Maltipoos rarely shed and are excellent dogs for allergy suffers.
Maltipoo tend to be social dogs and require la lot of human love and attention. They are noted for their intelligence and affectionate nature, but need to be socialized early on. Unsocialized Maltipoos tend to be wary around strangers, and may nip at unfamiliar children and animals. The Maltipoo is suited to apartment life, but requires daily exercise. Maltipoos who are not given enough time to play and run tend to become moody, which can lead to destructive behaviour.
Maltipoos have gained popularity in recent years. They are now commonly found in most North American suburbs and have been photographed with celebrities like Jessica Simpson.
Maltipoos
Hybrid dogs tend to be healthier than purebreds but are susceptible to illnesses, dog diseases and disorders from both parents. The Maltese is prone to sunburn in areas where the hair parts, as well as skin, eye, tooth and respitory problems. The Maltese can experience digestive problems and does not like extreme hot and cold weather (some owners recommend paper training or "kitty litter" training their Maltese, to avoid going outside in extreme weather. If your Maltipoo exhibits an aversion to hot and cold, you may want to consider this). Poodles are generally healthy but are prone to eye, ear and skin infections, as well as digestive and heart problems. Some bloodlines suffer from IMHA - a sudden disease with an almost 100% mortality rate. Symptoms include lethargy, pale gums, and blood in urine. The average lifespan for a Maltipoo ranges 12 - 18 years.
Maltipoo Puppies
If you have purchased Maltipoo puppies for sale or even any Maltipoo for sale they may whine and cry when left alone at night. It is very easy to give in to these adorable little pooches but as an owner, boundaries must be set. Maltipoos are intelligent, but they are also playful, and can become easily distracted. Keep training sessions short - between 2-5 minutes. The recent surge in popularity for this breed has led some breeders to irresponsibly mate to keep up with demand. When looking for a breeder, make sure potentials have appropriate health clearance, allow you to meet the parents, and allow you to see the breeding area (try not to buy from breeders who isolate puppies in cages and do not allow them to play. Isolated puppies have difficulty bonding with people later on in life). You should also see what organizations the breeder is registered with, and inquire if the dog will be vaccinated.
