Staffordshire Bull Terriers

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier (or "Staffie" for short) is a muscular, compact dog, measuring 13-16 inches and weighing 23-38 pounds. They are incredibly strong and are very "extreme" in their temperament - they play hard, work hard, and are incredibly affectionate towards their families. Staffies make an excellent watch dog, and are often wrongly described as intimidating. These dogs are wonderfully friendly, and are excellent with children. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier can live quite comfortably in an apartment, so long as the owner understands this dog's primal instinct to walk. Staffies need to run around in dog parks or open fields from time to time. This breed is intelligent, but individualistic and stubborn, so dog obedience training needs to be consistent. Undisciplined Staffordshires can cause quite a bit of damage!

The Staffie originated in Staffordshire, England in the 1800s and is a cross between a Bulldog and various Terrier breeds. It was originally used for bull-baiting, a popular betting game of the time which involved trained Staffies overpowering a chained bull and suffocating it. As public interest in bull baiting went down, so did interest in the breed. In 1935, Staffies experienced a surge in popularity, which they have been riding ever since.

Staffies

Staffies have strong jaws and a powerful bite, so avoid plastic and vinyl toys that can break apart easily and cause the dog to choke. They are fearless and curious, and for their own safety, need to be kept on a leash when in public and in strange places. Staffies are agile creatures and actively compete in agility competitions in the UK. While this dog would make a wonderful family pet, Staffies are not recommended for everyone. They can be difficult to train at times are require a lot of care. Only purchase a Staffie if you are willing to make this time commitment.

Staffies are prone to eye problems, particularly HC and PHPV, both hereditary dog diseases which can be easily avoided by screening the health of the dog's parents. Hip dysplasia is also common. Healthy Staffies live 10-16 years and are extremely easy to groom. They should be brushed with a firm bristle brush and only shampooed when necessary. They are average to light shedders.

Stafordshire Puppies

If you are planning to buy Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppies for sale or Staffordshire Bull Terrier for sale you should not leave them untrained as they tend to be quire destructive. They love to chew on furniture and shoes, and are difficult to housebreak. A huge time commitment is require to properly train these pups, and the help of a professional is often required. These puppies also have an extremely curious nature, which can result in injury, so monitor your puppy closely - especially when it is in a new environment. Staffies are normally ok with other pets, but can be unpredictable around strange dogs, so make sure to socialize early and have your puppy properly vaccinated. Your puppy will be ready to come home with you at eight weeks old. Do not bring a puppy home before that - they are not physically or mentally developed to be away from their mothers before this time. Always make sure to buy from a reputable breeder to avoid potential health problems and ensure that the puppy was bred in humane circumstances.
