Airedale Terriers
Airedale Terrier is named after its place of origin i.e. Airedale in Yorkshire (England) in the mid 19th century. This member of the terrier breed has also been variously called King of Terriers (for its larger size) and Waterside Terrier (after its early breeding practice near River Aire). Airedale Terrier was produced by working class people of Airedale through crossing old English rough-coated Black and Tan Terrier with the Otterhound. The name Airedale Terrier was accepted as once of the legitimate dog breeds in 1886.
PhysicalFeatures
With a height of about 23 to 24 inches and weight falling in the range of 20 to 33 kg, Airedale Terrier is the largest of the terrier breed. It has mostly dark and small eyes (light colored and/prominent eyes considered not desirable) and teeth which are the largest among those of all terriers, enabling Airedale Terriers to take a strong bite. The coat of Airedale Terrier is dense, hard, and wiry - the undercoat being comparatively soft and short. Mostly, Airedale Terriers are groomed via stripping i.e. loose hair is `brushed' off the coat by means of a small, serrated knife. Black saddle and dark grizzle saddle (black and gray mixed) are the standard colors for Airedale Terrier coat. In the US, many owners and dog breeders dock the tail before sending the Airedale Terrier puppies for sale. However, this is not legally allowed in the UK and some other European countries. A litter of Airedale Terriers usually consist of 5 to 12 puppies.
Temperament
Intelligence, independence, strong will, and - at times - stubbornness all characterize the temperament of Airedale Terrier. Like most other terriers, Airedale Terriers are hunting dogs but they also have the inclination to chase animals away and protect herds. On the whole, they are very agile and tenacious. A number of people also find Airedale Terrier a good entertainer since it can be trained with some patience and consistency. They need to be socialized with other dogs early or else they can get freaky in their company. Constant reinforcement is usually needed during training sessions since an Airedale Terrier may start ignoring the instructions. As they are very expressive of their feelings and loving of their human friends, Airedale Terriers are good dogs for living with families.
Health
The life span of an Airedale Terrier for sale is mostly 10 to 13 years, averaging almost 12 years. While it is generally considered a hardy breed, many Airedale Terriers suffer from eye problems, hip dysphasia, and infections of skin. Those having dry skin are particularly vulnerable to catching skin infections. Such Airedale Terriers may be kept safe by feeding them on an adequately proportioned dog diet containing omega-6/omega-3 fatty acid.
A good deal of grooming is required to keep them free from dust and disease-causing parasites. Taking them on long daily walks also keeps them fit and happy.
