American Bulldogs
The American bulldog was initially bred to be a working class dog that was good at catching livestock and protecting their master's property. It is often compared to the Old English bulldog but the American bulldog is larger in size.
An American bulldog is stocky built and looks to be strong. Its coat is usually short and can be black and white, brindle and white, or fawn and white. Some American bulldogs actually have all three colors. When born the American bulldog puppies for sale are small round bundles of wrinkles with chubby little bodies. Some of the American bulldog puppies may be born solid white and later develop black or fawn colored spots. When fully matured the American bulldog with weigh from 60 to 125 pounds.
There are actually two different breed of the American bulldog such as the classic and the standard. Sometimes the standard breed will be mistaken for its cousin the American pit bull terrier because of the way it looks. The American bulldog is actually much larger and has a resemblance to the Old English bulldog.
The standard American bulldog for sale bears a close resemblance to the pit bull in that they are muscular and can be white or have white patches. The difference is in the shape of the head. The American bulldog has a box shaped head where the pit bull has a head that is shaped like a wedge. Also, the American bulldog has ears that remain uncropped.
In the United States the original bulldog was considered to be a working class dog that farmers used around the farm to perform a variety of tasks. After the end of World War II the breed came dangerously close to being extinct. A war veteran decided to keep the breed going so he began carefully breeding the American bulldogs and keeping strict records on appearance and health. He also kept the breed as a working class breed. With years of dedication to resurrect the breed, the American bulldog is no longer in danger of becoming extinct.
The American bulldog is usually very happy and friendly. He is perfectly comfortable with his family and will also attempt to get to know strangers. They love children but because of the strength, should be supervised around children because they could hurt them acidentally. The form a strong bond with their family and have a protective instinct. They often will display a dominant attitude and must be kept under control with socialization and obedience training. Training should begin with American bulldog puppies to prevent them from growing into stubborn adults. Obedience should be inforced every day so the dog will not revert back into its stubborn ways.
Because they are working dogs the American bulldog has a lot of energy and needs plenty of room to exercise. Often they will be prone to chase cats and smaller pets but this is where the obedience training comes in. They are not happy to be indoor dogs all day long since this does not provide them with enough exercise. They are also too big to be lap dogs.
