American Eskimos

The American Eskimo, a gorgeous dog with a thick white coat, comes in three varieties: Toy (9-12 inches, 6-10 pounds), Miniature (12-15 inches, 10-20 pounds) and Standard (15-19 inches, 18-35 pounds). American Eskimos are wonderful with children, playful in nature, and adaptable to a variety of living conditions. They are easy to train and are friendly towards people, once they have developed a sense of trust. This breed is well-suited to life in an apartment but will gain weight easily so frequent, daily exercise is a must. American Eskimos like to be a part of the family and may become destructive if left alone for long periods of time. Eskimos love to bark - an inclination that will be difficult to curb, even with early obedience training. This breed excels in watch dogging, guarding, agility, obedience and, thanks to a keen sense of smell, narcotics detection. The American Eskimo is a Nordic dog and is related to various German Spitz breeds, such as the Pomeranian, the White Keeshond and the Samoyed. This breed is a new addition to the AKC, receiving its designation in 1995.

Despite a vast amount of hair, the American Eskimo is relatively easy to groom. This breed requires about 2-3 brushes a week, which should be increased to a daily brush in warmer months, when the dog is shedding, and clean the ears out once a week. Bathe as needed and in accordance with the dog's lifestyle. Because of a white coat, American Eskimos will appear dirty faster than dogs with darker hair.

American Eskimos for sale are generally hardy, but they are prone to eye infections. Make sure to keep the hair in this area cut short, and frequently clean the eyes. Fleas are a problem for this breed, as is hip dysplasia. This breed has an above-average lifespan, averaging 15 years, and an average litter yields 5 puppies. American Eskimos are generally friendly with other animals but can sometimes exhibit dominant or aggressive behaviour. They should not be left unattended around other animals and should be kept on a leash when in public.

American Eskimos are popular dogs, so care should be taken when researching potential breeders. High demand for this breed has led to some irresponsible breeding practices. Try to avoid over aggressive or overly timid bloodlines. Ensure the breeder has health clearance for both parents and that the American Eskimo puppies for sale were bred in a humane and sanitary environment. Do not purchase from pet shops. Because American Eskimos can exert dominant behaviour with other dogs, which can lead to fighting, take great precautions to have your puppy vaccinated before socialization. As soon as possible, bring your puppy to a vet with a fresh stool sample. This will allow the vet to check for worms. This breed aims to please, so harsh criticism when obedience training is not necessary. Keep sessions fun and give lots of positive praise. Do not bring a puppy home before it has reached eight weeks of age, even if the breeder gives his or her consent. Puppies that are brought home before two months old often exhibit behavioural problems and can have difficulty bonding with their new family.
