Origin

The Beauceron was developed in France to be a versatile working dog that could herd sheep and cattle, protect the home and land, and guard the family. The Beauceron is considered to be an old breed with the earliest known record of their existence dating back to 1578. Despite the fact that they are centuries old, the Beauceron is not well known outside of their native France.

Size
The Beauceron weighs 70 to 110 pounds and measures 24 to 27.5 inches.

Grooming Needs
The Beauceron has a short coat that sheds lightly and just needs to be brushed once a week and bathed when dirty. Like all dogs, the Beauceron also needs basic grooming. Brush their teeth, clean their ears and trim their nails on a regular basis.

Beaucerons were also bred to be workers. They like to be given a task or job, even if it is as simple as retrieving laundry. Beaucerons do best when kept busy and need an outlet for their energy, particularly when they are young.

Training Needs
The Beauceron is highly intelligent and also highly independent. The Beauceron needs a confident, firm handler and lots of consistency. They are strong-willed, but should always be treated with kindness or they can shut down.

The Beauceron boasts an excellent memory and can be trained with the right leader. Once they understand the basics, the Beauceron can do well in agility, pulling and Schutzhund and also makes a good therapy dog.

As part of their training, the Beauceron should also be socialized early with people and other dogs. The Beauceron is naturally suspicious and territorial, and needs socialization to help them learn the difference between welcome and unwelcome visitors.

Activity Level
The Beauceron is an extremely active and energetic puppy that does not slow down until the age of 2 or 3. The Beauceron likes exercise and has a natural athleticism. This is not a breed for couch potatoes and if the Beauceron does not have enough activity, they are likely to act out and be destructive. The Beauceron needs a long daily walk but a hike or jog is even better. They also need plenty of time outside in a secure area to run around and play.
