Belgian Tervurens

The Belgian Tervuren is a beautiful herding dog. They range in colour from fawn to grey to mahogany, but colour normally darkens as the dog matures. The Tervuen is an intelligent, hard worker with territorial instincts. Because this breed is naturally protective, it requires a lot of socialization, starting at an early age. An unsocialized Tervuren will not be good with children, but one who has received proper training from an early age may be able to live quite well with them. Tervurens are family dogs and will not respond well to being left outside or cooped up in a dog boardning kennel. This dog needs to be occupied constantly and, if left to its own devices, may become destructive and moody. While Tervurens can live in an apartment, they are much happier in homes with medium to large-sized yards. Measuring 22-26 inches and weighing 60-75 pounds, this large breed is generally friendly, but some bloodlines demonstrate aggressive behaviour, while others are overly fearful. When choosing a pup, it is best to observe the behaviour of the parent dogs as well as that of the pup and the litter. Overly aggressive and skittish Tervurens are difficult to train - and some may be untrainable.

The Tervuren is one of four varieties of Belgian Sheepdogs. Tervurens excel in herding and are extremely agile, and are often employed by law enforcement officials and guide dogs and as aids for the disabled. Other varieties of the Belgian Sheepdog include the Groendael, which has a long black coat, the Laeknois, normally fawn and noted for its coarse coat, and the Malinois, which is fawn or mahogany with black markings. The Belgian Tervuren is named after the village in which it originated, and is a cross between a variety of herding dogs. The Tervuren was recognized as a purebred by the AKC in 1959.

Tervurens

The average lifespan of a Belgian Tervuren for is 13 years and an average litter yields 8 puppies. Tervurens tend to overeat and bloat, so it may be best to feed this breed two or three small meals a day, coupled with a lot of exercise, as opposed to one large meal This breed is generally healthy but some bloodlines suffer from epilepsy and eye problems. Skin dog allergies are also common, as is hip dysplasia.

Tervurens have a lot of hair and require a daily brush and, because hair can easily become matted, frequent trims. If you have purchased a Belgian Tervuren for sale or Belgian Tervurens Puppies for sale you will need to bathe them as needed and have the dog professionally groomed at least once a year.

Tervuren Puppies

Belgian Tervurens Puppies do not respond well to, and may ignore, harsh criticism. This breed is intelligent and obedient but can be difficult to train, so it is recommended employing the help of a professional. Some Tervuren puppies scare easily, so it is best to exercise them on quiet roads, away from loud traffic and unpredictable noises. Do not leaveTervuren puppies unattended around children, and if bringing them into a home with children, educate the children on how to be considerate and gentle with the puppy. Tervurens have good memories, and traumatic events that take place in youth will be remembered well into adulthood.
