Origin
The exact origin of the Black and Tan Coonhound is unclear, but the breed is known to be one of the few true American breeds, emerging in the late 1700s. The Black and Tan Coonhound is believed to have descended from the Bloodhound, Talbot Hound and Virginia Foxhound and was created to be a working and hunting dog.   

Size
The Black and Tan Coonhound weighs 65 to 100 pounds and measures 23 to 27 inches.

Grooming Needs
The Black and Tan Coonhound has a short, thick and oily coat.  The Black and Tan Coonhound sheds year round and more so with the change of seasons in the spring and fall. They should be brushed two to three times a week and even more frequently during their heavier shedding seasons.
