Border Collies

Border Collies are wonderful, friendly-looking dogs, best known for their intelligence, responsiveness and agility. The Border Collie is extremely obedient, energetic and trainable, and is often used to herd sheep and by the police force to detect bombs and narcotics. Border Collies can be trained as blind guides and are employed to assist the handicapped in the Netherlands. This breed requires a lot of daily exercise and strongly desires work. Border Collies do not like to sit around day after day and will become destructive and moody if left to laze. This is an extremely loving breed of dog but they are only recommended to people who are willing to incorporate the dog into their busy active lifestyle (of hiking, Frisbee, and swimming, for example.), and are willing to spend a lot of time training the dog.

Border Collies are medium sized dogs, measuring between 46 and 56 cm and weighing between 30-45 pounds. They are not recommended for apartments and small spaces, and will not do well chained in a backyard all day. Border Collies are known to nip small children and can be uneasy around strangers, and are best suited to an experienced owner who appreciates the dog's intelligence and desire for hard work.

Border Collies

An average shedder, Border Collies require monthly dog grooming and normally live between 12-15 years. They are prone to eye problems. Some bloodlines suffer from epilepsy, and most Border Collies are sensitive to fleas. Border Collies are fine around other animals but might become aggressive around other Border Collies of the same sex. They are excitable and enthusiastic, which can sometimes be misinterpreted as aggression. Border Collies have strong ties to their herding heritage, and are extremely sensitive to motion. They sometimes attempt to control the movements of family members and moving objects such as bicycles and automobiles. Collies can react unexpectedly when surprised by motion, and have been known to attempt to corral small children and owner must take great pains to ensure their yard is enclosed. This breed is often referred to as an "escape artist", due to it love of digging. It would be extremely easy for a Border Collie to create an opening under a typical chain link fence. Border Collies are fantastic jumpers and have been known to clear six-foot walls. Once a Border Collie has escaped from its yard, its herding instincts can lead to disaster. Many unleashed and/or unattended Border Collies are injured or killed each year by attempting to herd moving vehicles. Early training can help curb this instinct.

Border Collie Puppies

An average Border Collie litter consists of 6 puppies. Border Collie puppies are normally curious and friendly and must be quickly taught to curb over enthusiastic tendencies. Although Border Collies learn quickly they often go through a phase in their adolescence where they "challenge" and sometimes ignore their owner's commands. Puppies need to be given diversity in their daily routine, and require a lot of physical activity.

Although beautiful and loyal, Border Collies are not for everyone. If you are not willing to spend a lot of time training and exercising your dog, do not buy any Border Collies for sale or Border Collie puppies for sale . It is a sad fact that many of these wonderful dogs end up in pounds and shelters, cast out of their homes by owners who have bit off more they can chew.
