Border Terriers
The Border Terrier is a small dog with a big personality, best identified by its large eyes and short "beard". They are alert but mild-mannered dogs and love children. While they do bark, they are not aggressive, and are often afraid of loud noises like fireworks and thunder. This is an extremely agile dog who excels in hunting, running, and watch dogging. While Border Terriers will attempt to hunt small rodents and birds, they will cooperate with other, larger pets, but are sometimes adverse to cats. Border Terriers are comfortable living in an apartment, but do not like being left alone all day. Border Terriers were originally bred to hunt, and have a strong instinct to walk and exercise. In addition to walks, they require frequent runs in dogs parks and fenced in areas. Border Terriers are relatively small dogs, measuring 11-16 inches and weighing 11-16 pounds, and they are not big eaters. The Border Terrier has a wiry coat which requires a weekly brush and a semi-annual trim. Bathe only when necessary. This breed is an extremely light shedder and is an excellent companion for an dog allergy sufferer.
The Border Terrier originated in a border town between England and Scotland and was developed to help farmers protect their livestock by hunting and killing foxes. Although quite small, Border Terriers are noted for their stamina and their ability to keep up with much larger animals. Today, Border Terriers can still be found catching rodents on farms. The Border Terrier was recognized as a purebred by the AKC in 1930.
Border Terriers
Often, Border Terriers do not exhibit any outward signs of illness, so if you have bought a Border Terrier for sale then special attention should be paid to subtle behavioural changes. They are prone to Canine Epileptois Cramping Syndrome (CECS), a hereditary, neurological/muscle disorder which causes the muscles to temporarily cramp or spasm, resembling a seizure. This dog disease is sometimes misdiagnosed as canine epilepsy. Healthy Border Terriers can expect to live for about 15 years, and an average litter yields about 5 puppies.
Border Terriers have wonderful personalities and are protective of their families. Their friendly nature and intelligence makes them a true joy to be around.
Border Terrier Puppies
Border Terrier puppies for sale are ready to leave their mothers around 8 weeks of age, but will require some time to get settled into your new home (anywhere from a few days to a few weeks). They may be shy and cautious at first, and may resist playing dog games or barking. This is typical for the breed and will fade once the dog has learned to trust you and your family. Border Terrier puppies are extremely easy to train and housebreak, and are very good at picking up tricks. They are treat-motivated, and will do just about anything to get one!
When left alone, puppies may act in a destructive manner, so they should be trained early not to chew on furniture. Puppies may be aggressive with strangers, but this can be curbed through early socialization. Because these dogs have a strong instinct to run, they tend to pull on leashes, so make sure to correct puppies if they exhibit this behaviour.
