Border Terrier

Small, but mighty, the Border Terrier has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

Origin
The Border Terrier is one of the oldest terrier breeds to emerge from the British Isles. The Border Terrier originated between the border of England and Scotland in the 18th century. The breed was developed specifically to work on farms. Border Terriers would guard the stock from foxes and chase vermin off the property.

Size
The Border Terrier weighs 11 to 16 pounds and measures 10 to 11 inches.

Grooming Needs
The Border Terrier has a wiry double coat that sheds minimally. The Border Terrier should be brushed once a week, bathed when necessary and hand stripped twice a year. Like all dogs, the Border Terrier also needs basic grooming. Brush their teeth, clean their ears and trim their nails on a regular basis.

Character
The Border Terrier is good natured and sociable.

Temperament
The Border Terrier is more mellow and laidback than other terriers. The Border Terrier was often raised with their farm family and has thus become very amiable and reliable. The Border Terrier does not constantly seek out attention from their family members, although they do love to play and are affectionate. While they are easygoing, they are not aloof and will want to be included in family activities.

Border Terriers may be small, but they make good watch dogs. They are alert and will bark when someone new approaches. Border Terriers should not be relied on to be guard dogs though; they are too friendly to deter anyone.

Training Needs
The Border Terrier, like many terrier breeds, is intelligent but stubborn. The Border Terrier learns quickly, but may not always be so responsive to commands. With patience and treats, the Border Terrier can pick up the basics and go on to participate in earthdog trials, obedience and agility.

Activity Level
Border Terriers were bred to be working dogs, making them energetic and athletic. They need daily exercise in the form of long walks and time outside in a secure area to run around and play. Although small, Border Terriers can also make good jogging partners.
