Boston Terriers

Often referred to as the "Boston Bull", Boston Terriers are tiny, muscular dogs. While they were originally bred for dog fighting, Boston Terriers of today tend to be friendly, intelligent and alert. Boston Terriers are relatively quiet dogs and are considered good guards because they bark only when necessary. Excellent with children and the elderly, friendly with strangers, and easily adaptable to cramped city life as well as a spacious life on a farm, a Boston Terrier is an easy going pet, suitable for a wide range of lifestyles. Today these tiny dogs measure up to 43 cm and weight between 10-25 pounds - rather heavy considering the small stature of the dog but significantly smaller than Boston Terriers of the past. In the early 1800s Boston Terriers, bred for fighting, weighed up to 45 pounds!

This breed originated in Boston, Massachusetts, and was recognized by the AKC dog organization as a purebred breed in 1893. Through selective breeding, Boston Terriers have become much less aggressive, although some male dogs are territorial and may exhibit angry behaviour if they feel invaded.

Boston Terriers

If you have bought a Boston Terrier for sale or Boston Terrier puppies for sale you will not require to do a lot of dog grooming. Because of their short faces and nasal passages, Boston Terriers often have difficulty breathing and do not like extreme hot and cold temperatures. These dogs tend to snore and drool and are prone to eye infections but are, overall, healthy dogs. An average litter is about 4 puppies, but because they are often born with large heads, birthing is commonly via Caesarian section, preformed by a trained and reputable veterinary professional.

Boston Terriers are easily identifiable by their two-toned colouring, normally a combination of white and either black, brindle or seal (a term specific to this breed, meaning black colouring with red highlights when viewed in bright light). The pattern of the coat resembles a formal suit, earning the Boston Terrier the nickname "American Gentleman". Boston Terriers are easily excitable and seem to have an endless supply of energy. Strong-willed and mischievous, these dogs love to play dog games and run around in a fenced-in enclosure.

Boston Terrier Puppies

Boston Terrier puppies are eager creatures, and have a willingness to learn. Unfortunately their abundant energy can make them difficult to control when young. This breed requires a firm but patient owner who is willing to invest a lot of time into dog training. Some puppies have a stubborn streak, which can be minimalized early in life through proper training and socialization. Lots of noisy toys delight small Boston Terriers, and they require a lot of affection in order to be truly happy. Early socialization is recommended, but not until the puppy has been properly assessed by a vet and vaccinated. Puppies tend to sniff and roll around in the dirt, so ears and eyes should be checked for grass seeds and dirt after playing outdoors.

Boston Terriers are wonderful companions and make great additions to dog-loving families. A perfect pet for just about everyone - it's not wonder this breed has steadily been gaining popularity among North American pet owners!
