Boykin Spaniels

The Boykin Spaniel is a regal looking dog with a beautiful deep to liver brown coat. They are similar in appearance to their close cousin the Cocker Spaniel, but have less hair and are larger in size. Boykins are pleasant dogs who make great companion and family pets, and they love to swim. The Boykin Spaniel is adept at many skills, like hunting and retrieving. An active dog, the Boykin Spaniel requires a lot of daily activity. While they will do OK in an apartment, they can become destructive if left to their own devices for too long. This breed like to work, and loves to be given odd jobs, like fetching slippers or the daily paper. Boykins make wonderful additions to families - they adore children and are patient with them. Under exercised Boykins, however, can be moody.

Measuring 15-18 inches and weighing 25-40 pounds, the Boykin is a mid-sized dog who originated in the 20th century in South Carolina, and is closely related to the American Water Spaniel, the Springer Spaniel, Pointers and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. This breed was originally employed to flush out and retrieve game. Praised for its hunting abilities, Boykins are popular among bird hunters and they are the official dog of the state of South Carolina. On January 1, 2008, the Boykin Spaniel was granted purebred designation by the AKC. In terms of grooming, Boykins are relatively low maintenance dogs, but require frequent bushing to prevent their coat from matting.

Boykin Spaniels

If you have purchased a Boykin Spaniel for sale or Boykin Spaniel puppies for sale you will know they are realtively healthy dogs, but are prone to hip dysplasia and eye problems. Some bloodlines are prone to heart problems. The Boykin has a longer than average lifespan of 14-16 years, and an average litter yields 6 puppies. Because these dogs love to swim, the ears should be regularly cleaned. It is not uncommon for water and debris to get trapped inside them, causing infection. Aside from their unmistakable amber eyes, Boykins are noted for their patience and devotion to their families. They are agile and versatile hunters who are able to track and retrieve game in a variety of situations.

Boykin Spaniel Puppies

Because this breed is relatively new, ensure potential breeders have certified that your pup is a purebred of at least 3-5 generations. Boykins are generally docile dogs, and if potential parents do not exhibit this behaviour it is best to keep looking. Only purchase from breeders who raise Boykin Spaniel puppies in clean conditions and have health clearance. Your Boykin will be ready to come home with you by eight weeks of age and training must begin from the start. They love to play, and are affectionate towards children. Make sure to be gentle with these pups until they are full grown. Your puppy will need to become accustomed to your daily routine, and if you are planning on leaving it alone all day it is best to provide your dog with some toys. Boykins are wonderful, faithful family pets. If trained properly, they will be a constant companion and will provide your family with many years of joy.
