Popular Breeds
Brittany
Brittanies were developed in the Brittany province of France sometime in the 1800s and they are usually bred to be bird hunters. They are often referred to as being in the spaniel group but they work more like the pointer or setter.
The Brittany is usually very athletic with a compact body that is solid but not heavy. Their legs are usually long and they give an expression that speaks of intelligence. They are alert and full of vigor.
Some Brittany puppies are born with a short tail while others will be born with a long tail. It is typical for the tail to be docked to 1 to 4 inches. Some places forbid the docking of tails so if the Brittany has a long tail they should carry it straight and level with their back. It is also acceptable to carry the tail slightly lower than the back.
The adult Brittany should weigh 25 to 30 pounds and the shoulder height should be equal to the length of the body. Some people feel that there are actually two different types of
Brittanies; the American and the French version. While that are both considered to be the same breed, there are differences in the appearance of the two. The American Brittany will be taller and can run faster because it is bred to cover a lot of open ground when hunting. The French version is smaller and has the look of a spaniel. They are bred to work with people who carry and shoot guns.
In the beginning the Brittany was referred to as the Brittany Spaniel but later the spaniel was dropped from the name because the Brittany is considered to be a pointer and the spaniel is considered to be a flushing dog which is used to flush the prey out of the bushes.
Once you have bought a Brittany for sale or Brittany puppies for sale you will know their temperament is gentle and sweet. They are generally easy to train and most respond to a stern word or look instead of other forms of chastisement. Special care must be taken during dog training to make sure the Brittany spirit is not broken. They tend to be great around small children but because of their energy level they may accidentally hurt a child if left unsupervised. Most in this breed love children to the point of letting children climb on their back and ride. Brittanies also get along well with other dogs but because they have such a friendly nature they may not be very good at being a guard dog. They do make good house pets but they need to have enough exercise to keep them out of trouble when they are left alone.
Brittanies are usually healthy and have a life span of 14 to 15 years. Some are prone to dog diseases like hip dysplasia and ear infections but these occurrences are rare.
