Central Asian Ovtcharkas

The Central Asian Ovtcharka is a dog that has many dog names. It is also known as a Mid Asian Shepherd, Central Asian Shepherd Dog, or Alabai. They also can have different appearances. The area that they are bred in usually determines the way they look.

Central Asian Octcharkas are muscular in build and often get mistaken for a bull mastiff or a Saint Bernard. Their actual appearance is actually a cross between these two breeds. Their body is stocky and solid. They have massive shoulders and large feet. Their body is long and firm and some of them exhibit an arch in their back. Some people prefer to dock their tails when they are born but it is perfectly acceptable to leave the tails undocked.

Probably the most notable characteristic about the central Asian Ovtcharka is their large head that also exhibits intelligence. Their eyes are dark and set deep in the head and most people prefer to crop their ears when they are still young. Some areas prohibit this practice because they feel that it is cruel treatment.

Central Asian Ovtcharka puppies are usually born with short coats but some of them will develop longer coats as they mature. The ones that develop the longer coats will tend to shed less than the version with the short coat. The most common variety will have a long coat that stays thick and dense throughout the entire year. The long hair may have a wavy appearance and it will usually be thicker around the neck and head area. Even the ones with the short coats also have a thick undercoat that protects them in the colder climates.

The Central Asian Ovtcharka for sale and the Central Asian Ovtcharka puppies for sale you see in dog stores come from several different places in Asia such as Iran and Tibet. They are considered to be one of the oldest breed of dogs to be found. It is believed that they were originally bred to be herders who helped the sheep herders in Iran keep up with their flock. They are also bred for protection for their masters. They are very much at home on a working farm and they love to have room to run and get their exercise. Because of their thick coat they usually prefer to be outside rather inside where the heat is on. In the American kennel associations the Central Asian Ovtcharka is considered to be a rare breed.

The Central Asian Ovtcharka is often considered to be very protective and will exhibit dominancy over other dogs. They rarely exhibit fear and they are very courageous. They do not tend to be aggressive but they will not get along with other dogs that have a dominant nature.

Because of their protective nature it is important to begin training early in life. Socialization is important, especially if there are other animals around. They fit in well within the family structure but they must be taught that they are not the master. It is important to keep them on a leash until they are well trained to stay at your heels or obey your commands. Obedience training may be necessary to help you take control of your Central Asian Ovtcharka.
