Chesapeake Bay Retrievers

As the name implies, the Chesapeake Bay retriever is a breed of dog developed along the Chesapeake Bay. It was bred for hunting and is able to hunt under adverse weather conditions as well as adverse water conditions. They have been known to break the ice in order to make the retrieval they are after. Chesapeake Bay retrievers are very protective of their master and will also help protect their master's property.

The Chesapeake Bay retriever has some distinctive features such as eyes that are clear with a yellow or amber tint and hindquarters that will rise higher than the height at the shoulders. They have a double coat that is slightly wavy on the shoulders, neck, and back. Their coat is also waterproof and feels slightly oily. Many times their coat will give off a musky odor. Generally their color is brown but they may have varying shades of brown to red and still be acceptable. Some may also have patches of white on their chest, belly, and feet. Because they are swimmers, their toes are webbed. They have a large and powerful chest that allows them to break ice when duck hunting.

Chesapeake Bay retriever puppies for sale are born with short hair that will grow longer as they mature with good puppy weight. They also are frequently born with blue eyes that will change with age. Chesapeake Bay retriever puppies should have a lot of attention to acclimate them to people. Although they generally get along well with people, they will tend to be loyal to one person and need to be socialized to get along with others.

The Chesapeake Bay retriever is generally considered to be dominant and should not be put in a household where there is another dominant male. They usually have a bright and happy attitude and will not seek out a fight but they usually will not back down from one either. Often they can be vocal and sometimes this is taken as a growl but this is just a friendly trait of the breed. Some will actually appear to have a smile when they see their master coming home.

They tend to have one person that they look to as being their master and all other family members as being on an equal level to them. They tend to be extremely strong and territorial so daily training is a must if you want to keep them under your control.

The earlier the training begins the better since the adult dogs are hesitant to change. They do possess a very high intelligence and will retain what they learn.

The breed is generally healthy and strong but can be predisposed to hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy as dog diseases. Frequent check-ups can help slow or prevent these problems from occurring. They have a life span from 9 to 12 years.
