In 1978, the Guiness book of World Records listed the Shar Pei as the world's rarest dog because of its ancient history. In Chinese, the name translates roughly as "draping sand paper like skin", probably, because of their short, straight and bristly coat. In the early days of its evolution, the Chinese Shar Pei was called "Chinese Fighting Dog" owing to the tenacious fighting skills it displayed at the time. Today, however, Chinese Shar Peis have become much sought after as unique family pets.

Historic evolution

The Chinese Shar Pei is an ancient breed that had its origins during the Han Dynasty of 220-202 B.C., particularly in the Southern provinces of China. Apart from being a fighting dog at the time, Chinese Shar Peis were also used during hunting, or for herding and protection. As its numbers diminished, partly due to fighting, the Chinese Shar Pei almost became extinct in mainland China. However, a gentleman, named Matgo Law, persuaded Americans to support development of the breed. In response, several Westerners sustained the few remaining Chinese Shar Peis and their numbers grew significantly from then on. The Chinese Shar Pei was finally brought to the U.S. in the mid-twentieth century and soon gained the little "Most Rare Breed".

Appearance

The Chinese Shar Pei has loose, wrinkled skin giving it an endearing, distinctly sad and frowning look. By adulthood, Chinese Shar Peis reach a height between 18-20 inches and are therefore categorized as medium-sized "dogs. They weigh between 35-60 lbs grown up not puppy weight. The Chinese Shar Pei has a coat that has solid colors which include cream, light or dark fawn, red and black. Other distinctive features that merit mention are its small drop ears and excessively loose, wrinkled skin.

Temperamental instincts

The Chinese Shar Pei is friendly, well mannered and has an easy going nature. However, it will show aggression towards any dog that it meets. Chinese Shar Peis are also suspicious of strangers, although reserved and calm by nature. Their basic instinct is to protect and this is why they are chosen as pets in addition to their affection and loyalty to the family that owns them. The Chinese Shar Pei can also be stubborn at times and therefore requires a firm hand while dog training. If Chinese Shar Peis are trained early on, they can be good to be around children and other house pets. Healthcare and exercise

The Chinese Shar Pei requires continuous maintenance and veterinarian care.
