Designers

More and more you are hearing about designer dogs. A designer dog is actually a dog that is a cross between two know pure breeds. Also called hybrids, these dogs may possess traits from both of their parents. They are different from the Heinz 57 variety in that their parents are both pure bred dogs of some type.

Some people started breeding the designer because they want to lessen the degree of genetic problems some breeds have. For an example, the weenie dog is long, slender, and has short legs. Because their body is so long they tend to have back problems later in life. Sometimes these problems can be corrected with surgery but at other times the dog will have to be put down because it is in constant pain. Crossing a weenie dog with a beagle would give you a dog that is likely to have a stronger back and a somewhat shorter body. Because the body is shorter there is more support for the back and less chances of back problems when they are adults.

When you breed two types of dogs there is really no way of knowing what kind of designer puppies you are going to get. They may look exactly like the mother or father or they may possess qualities of both. If you breed a poodle with a Yorkie you may end up with a Yorkie with curly hair. On the other hand you may get a poodle that has the straight silky hair that is usually seen on a Yorkie.

Cross breeding two pure bred dogs may not necessarily get you the designer dog you desire. You should be careful and study the characteristics of both breeds to determine if they will be compatible. Breeding a very large dog to a small dog is never a good idea. Also, breeding a delicate dog to one that is strong and active is not a good idea. You should always try to stay within the same size range so that you can insure the health of the mother and the puppies.

If you want your designer puppies to be non-allergenic you should consider two breeds that are both non-allergenic. If you prefer short hair it is best to stick with two short haired breeds. One tip to remember is the short hair varieties usually shed and can be detrimental to people with allergies.

It is also important to remember before buying designer puppies for sale or designer for sale that dogs are living, breathing beings that you should not just toss out like your old toaster. They are pets that require love and attention for their entire lives. Many dogs can live up to 15 years if cared for properly. For this reason it is not advisable for you to experiment with designer breeds unless you are prepared to take care of the dogs after they are born. It is important that you are responsible with your dogs and get them the care and support they need to become great pets. Responsibility may include finding them a great home so careful breeding is essential.
