English Pointers

The English Pointer is often called just Pointer. The breed was developed to be a hunter; therefore it is comfortable around guns. The English Pointer is just one of several dogs that are considered to be pointers.

English Pointers are considered to be athletic and they have a graceful gait that sets them apart from other dog breeds. They are usually alert and ready to go anytime their master desires to go hunting. They usually do not do very well in the show dog ring because of their hound characteristics.

The English Pointer has a short coat that does not require a lot of dog grooming. Usually a quick rub with a towel or wire brush will take care of any shedding the short coat may have.

English Pointer puppies are born with a short coat that looks much like their coat will when they mature. They have standard colors such as liver, lemon, black, or orange. You can also find English Pointers who are solid color or some of them have small specks of color dispersed throughout their white basecoat. The English Pointer that is dark in color will have a black nose whereas the lighter colors will have a nose that is the color of flesh.

English Pointers are usually even tempered and are happy to live indoors with their family. They are both affectionate and loyal to their family members. They do not possess any level of aggressive behavior. Because they are docile, they get along well with other animals. They do not usually tend to be dominant and they get along just as well with cats as they do with other dogs.

If you have kids at home, before buying an English Pointer for sale or English Pointer puppies for sale you need to know they get along well with small children but often English Pointer puppies are clumsy and awkward. This could pose a problem until the Pointer is matured. When company comes to the door the English Pointer is more likely to lick them rather than dog bite them.

The English Pointer is bred to hunt and this is when they are at their best. They love to hunt and they love to produce game to their master. They have a strong sense of pride in their actions. They require a lot of exercise so if you are not a hunter you will need to make sure that your Pointer has plenty of room to run.

Just as much as they like to run and hunt, English Pointers also like to lay on the couch and relax. After a long day of running and hunting they are likely to find their spot on the couch and remain there for the rest of the day. Many of them have their own favorite chair that they look forward to lounging in each evening. This makes them feel like they are indeed a part of the family.

The English Pointer usually enjoys good dog health and has a life span of 10-12 years. Really active Pointers who stay in good shape rarely have the health problems that other couch potato dogs tend to have. They tend to stay lean and muscular because of their active lifestyle. They make great pets for the active family and loyal companions for those who show them love.
