It is said that the Estrela Mountain Dog is a very ancient breed and is supposed to be the oldest breed of dog on the Iberian Peninsular. In many ways they have the temperament of a German Shepherd in that they are fiercely loyal and intelligent. Their size and demeanor may intimidate strangers until that stranger becomes acquainted with the dog. They love children and most of them prefer to be around children rather than adults.

He is a very beautiful dog that has grace and stature. His coloring will either be fawn, brindle, or wolf grey. All three of these colors should be accompanied by a black mask. Brindle is the most notable color since this is also the coloring of a German Shepherd.  Wolf grey is also a very acceptable and beautiful color when black hair is dispersed throughout the coat.
