Field Spaniels

The Field Spaniel is a medium-sized dog, measuring up to 18 inches and weighing 35-50 pounds. It is closely related to the Cocker Spaniel, but is heavier and longer. This breed is normally a solid colour and comes in liver, black or tan. It is a wonderful dog full of personality, and is noted for its good manners. Field Spaniels have an independent streak, which they like to flex once in awhile. They are good with other pets and with children, but do not respond well to rough housing. Field Spaniels are extremely sensitive and will become deeply hurt if harshly criticized. Field Spaniels are well-mannered dogs and are often praised as having one of the best personalities among the Spaniel breeds. They need to be a part of the family and will become moody and destructive if left alone outdoors or locked away in a kennel.

The Field Spaniel is a result of selective breeding of the English Cocker Spaniel, and it originated in England. It is excellent at hunting birds, tracking, retrieving and watch dogging. Due to the popularity of the Cocker Spaniel, the Field Spaniel is a rare dog.

Field Spaniels

Like Cocker Spaniel, the Field Spaniel is generally healthy but is prone to ear infections and hip dysplasia as dog diseases. Healthy Field Spaniels can expect to live 12-15 years, and an average litter yields 5 puppies.Be careful before you buy Field Spaniels for sale or Field Spaniel Puppies for sale as they are not recommended for apartment life. They have strong hunting instincts and require a medium-sized yard at the least. This dog will react quickly to commands and is happiest when it has a job to do, such as retrieving slippers, the morning paper, etc. This breed has a lot of energy and needs room to move around. Field Spaniels have a lot of stamina and require at least one (but preferably two or three) walks a day. This breed should be brushed at least once a week and trimmed every few months, and they are an average shedder. The area around the ears (and the eyes) should be cleaned regularly to avoid the onset of infection. You may want to take your Field Spaniel for a professional trim at least once a year.

Field Spaniel Puppies

Due to their rarity most Field Spaniels are closely related, so ask potential dog breeders if the parent dogs have been tested for genetic defects. Ask to meet the parents - if the breeder refuses, this is a sign that you should look somewhere else (with the exception that the breeder has used a parent that does not belong to the breeder - in that instance, meeting both parents would be impossible). The happiest Field Spaniels are the ones who have been socialized early - so try to purchase one that has been raised in a well-socialized environment. Field Spaniel Puppies that are kept isolated in cages for the first few weeks of life will have difficulty bonding with you and your family - and they never may. Do not purchase a puppy younger than 8 weeks. While puppies at 5-6 weeks are able to eat on their own, they require at least two more weeks before they are taken away from their mother.
