Glen of Imaal Terriers

The glen of Imaal Terrier is a wonderful, spunky dog with short legs and a long body. They have coarse, shaggy coats that come in blue, brindle, red and wheaten, with wide muzzles. Imaals are noted for their confidence and spirit. Imaals can be rambunctious around other dogs and cats and caution should be taken around small pets like hamsters and mice. Despite its confidence, Imaals are sensitive and shy away from harsh correction. Dog Training should be kept light with lots of play incorporated.

The Imaal is a mid-sized dog, measuring 14 inches and weighing 33-36 pounds. They can live comfortably in an apartment but require daily exercise. Imaals can sleep outdoors providing the weather is not extremely hot or cold, but housing them outdoors permanently is not recommended - these are family dogs and they require a lot of human interaction. Imaals are excellent watchdogs, only dog barking when danger is detected.

The Glen of Imaal Terrier originated in Ireland, and is rarely seen in North America. It is named after the Glen of Imaal in County Wicklow, Ireland and made its first public appearance in 1933. Imaals were originally bred for hunting foxes and badgers, and would often dig them out of their dens. This digging instinct remains today, as does their ability to hunt. Imaals are still used on farms to keep away rodents.

Imaals

If you are planning to purchase a Glen of Imaal Terrier for sale or Glen of Imaal Terrier puppies for sale you need to know they are relatively healthy dogs and typically live 12-15 years. They are easy to groom but require a professional trim twice a year. Glen of Imaal Terrier have hair that grows on the pads of their feet, which should be removed regularly to prevent matting. They shed little to no hair. Imaals are working dogs and enjoy a lot of stimulation. They have intimidating barks, and can be stubborn at times. It is important for this dog to be socialized early, but it must be kept on a leash when in public and in strange places. These dogs have an adventurous side which can get them into trouble if left unmonitored.

Glen of Imaal Puppies

Glen of Imaal Terrier puppies can be mischievous and fearless. Make sure to "puppy proof" your home - put chewable objects out of the puppy's reach and board up dangerous rooms in your house. These puppies can be extremely sensitive, so training should be extremely lighthearted - you want your puppy to respect you, not fear you. Because Glen of Imaal Terriers are rare in North America, finding a reputable breeder can be default, and puppies costly. It is important to make sure potential breeders are certified and have health papers for the parent dogs. Do not buy from breeders who house their dogs in dirty conditions and breed excessively. The more you know about the health history of the parent dogs and the environment in which your puppy was conceived, the better you will be able to care for your pup and monitor any potential health problems. Do not separate your pup from its mother before eight weeks of age - they are not mentally or physically ready to be apart from her before this time.
