Irish Terriers

If there's one pet you could call the `perfect family dog', it's the Irish Terrier. This is because it displays such endearing traits, viz., loyalty, obedience, affection and intelligence. Moreover, Irish Terriers are not hyperactive but free-spirited and mischievous and therefore, fun to have around. If you are looking for a pet, you may not have to look too far, just take a look at some Irish Terrier Puppies and choose one. You will later discover why an Irish Terrier is indeed the perfect family dog.

History and evolution:

The early history of the Irish Terrier is rather sketchy, however, many believe it to be one of the earliest breeds of Irish dogs which had its original in the district surrounding Cork in Ireland, during the 1700s. Again, how this breed evolved is a subject of debate and conjecture, but the general belief is that the Irish Terrier breed, in all probability, is a descendant of the earlier wheaten, tan and black colored Terriers. During the First World War, Irish Terriers earned the title "daredevils", following their success as `messenger' dogs. This was attributed to the courage they displayed during extremely difficult conditions. Later, the Irish Terrier was bred to control vermin while it was also acquired as a watch dog for family homes.

Features and appearance:

With its head held high and long, graceful neck, the Irish Terrier exudes an aura of pride in appearance. It has an intelligent demeanor, piercing dark brown eyes and folded ears. Irish Terriers have a sturdy compact appearance and are approximately 1 feet tall with an average weight between 24 to 28 lbs. The coat of the Irish Terrier is rather wiry but dense and close to its body. As far as color, it is either bright or golden red, or solid, red-wheaten. The physical shape of this breed of dog is noticeably different to that of other terriers, i.e. it is sleeker yet solid and sturdy looking in appearance but is longer than a Fox Terrier. It closely resembles an Irish Wolfhound, but is much smaller.

Characteristic traits:

Although the Irish Terrier falls into the' medium-size' dog category, its looks can be deceiving. Irish Terriers are moderately active and extremely playful. This makes them safe around children, although they can be destructive around the home at times. They aren't too kind with other home pets and are courageous enough to take on any size of dogs. They're also possessive of their families and home which makes them excellent watchdogs. An Irish Terrier is not easy to train and can be quite disobedient. Patience, firmness but no harsh punishment, can work to an extent. An Irish Terrier is an excellent rodent hunter and will demonstrate this instinct around the home should you have one.

Owning one:

It is advisable to learn as much as you can about this breed as you can. This is because different Irish Terrier breeds display different traits.
