Irish Water Spaniels

The Irish Water Spaniel, the largest of the Spaniels, is rich brown in colour and has a curly coat. These dogs are loving and pleasant and are extremely obedient. Although prone to slobbering, this breed is regal in appearance and is noted for its watch dogging abilities. The Irish Water Spaniel is, like its name denotes, an excellent swimmer and enjoys spending time in the water. This dog is normally quiet, only dog barking when danger is near, but can sound very intimidating when they want to. Although obedient, Irish Water Spaniels will ignore commands from people who have not established a dominant relationship with them. This breed originated in Ireland and is related to the Poodle, Irish Setter and the Curly-Coated Retriever. In the 1800s, the Irish Water Spaniel became popular in the United States, where it was aided in duck hunts. Its mouth can be extremely soft and gentle, so much so that it has been known to hunt doves. Today, it is very rare to find Irish Water Spaniel for sale or the Irish Water Spaniel puppies for sale. Water Spaniels are not apartment dogs and are happiest in a home with a mid-to large size yard, in addition to their daily walks. These dogs love to be around water and would love to swim regularly. The Irish Water Spaniel is ideal for a family that lives close to or has access to a large lake that is safe for swimming. These dogs are, in fact, bred for life in the water. They have large chests that allow them to swim for long distances and "webbed" feet that enable them to paddle with ease.

Measuring 20-23 inches and weighing 45-65 pounds, this large dog requires a lot of grooming. Because its coat tends to mat it needs to be trimmed regularly, normally by a professional. On the plus side, Irish Water Spaniels are extremely light shedders and are considered hypoallergenic. Irish Water Dogs are working dogs and like to be kept active during the day. Those who are left to their own devices can become destructive.

Water Spaniels

Some bloodlines are prone to thyroid problems and ear infections, so make sure to clean the ears out regularly. The average lifespan of an Irish Water Spaniel is 11 years, and are often noted for their humorous, sometimes "clownish" behaviour. They are highly adaptable and versatile dogs and excel in most situations, regardless of the weather. This breed of dog aims to please and does not require harsh criticism.

Irish Water Spaniel Puppies

Irish Water Spaniel puppies are incredibly enthusiastic. Make sure to watch them carefully when in the water, as they may over-exert themselves. Puppies should not be brought home until they are at least eight weeks old. Before this time they are too young to be away from their mothers. Make sure to keep obedience training light-hearted and fun and, if leaving the puppy home alone all day, equipped with a lot of toys. Like the adults, puppies will need a lot of grooming, regardless of their level of activity. Take special care to ensure they are clean at all times. A clean puppy is less likely to develop an infection or become ill, and because their immune systems are still developing, puppies are far more susceptible to ailments.
