Irish Wolfhounds
The Irish Wolfhound is known for being one of the tallest dogs in the world. They used to be considered the biggest, but more recently, Great Danes have been breaking the records. Either way you look at it, Irish Wolfhounds are very big dogs. These dogs are domestic dogs, and they are usually called sight hounds because of their great vision. Despite their massive size, the Irish Wolfhounds can move very swiftly. Add that to their keen eyesight, and you have a good hunting dog. They also have a pretty rough coat. They also have, what can only be called as a box like head. Many people tend to think that the Irish Wolfhounds have a shape much like that of greyhounds. However, they are about five times the size. It looks more like a giant greyhound if anything.
Now, when you want to talk about overall size, the Irish Wolfhound ranks pretty high up there. From their withers (which is the point in which there neck meets their back) most Irish Wolfhounds are about 35 inches tall (give or take). As said before, this does not include how far their head comes up, but just to the top of their body. The female Irish Wolfhounds are usually a little bit smaller, usually by about four inches or so. Of course, when you look for Irish Wolfhound puppies for sale or Irish Wolfhound for sale you can tell that the females are a bit smaller. Their weight is nothing to joke about either. Some of these dogs can weigh about 140 to 180 pounds, making them a pain in your side when trying to move them off your bed so you can have a little room to sleep.
The funny thing about the Irish Wolfhound puppies is that by the age of seven months they look like a full grown adult dog, however, they are not. You should wait until the dog is at least 18 months old before you start running with it or making it do any work. Not waiting that long can cause irreparable damage to their limbs. On top of all this, the Irish Wolfhound is a very sweet tempered dog that is willing to be everyone's friend. A lot of people think that because of their size they can not be trusted with kids. However, this is not true. These dogs are very intelligent and know that they are bigger than the kids, and they are actually some of the best dogs that you can have around a child. Much like the Great Dane, an Irish Wolfhound will actually look after children when playing with them. The dog will do whatever it can to keep the child out of danger. Do keep in mind that the Irish Wolfhound is not a watch dog at all. In fact, they have been called the worst watch dogs in the history of the world. Although that may be a little bit too much of a title, they are not good watch dogs, because they tend to greet everyone with open arms, or paws (whatever).
The sad truth about the Irish Wolfhound is that it has one of the shortest life spans of any dog. In fact, they say that most of the Irish Wolfhounds only live about four and a half to nine years (at the most).
