The Kerry Blue Terrier is a muscular dog with a playful nature - they are lively and alert and enjoy playtime. the "Blue" in their name derives from the deep blue black colour which most pups are born with. For some dogs, this colour fades over time - Kerry Blues can be found in a variety of browns and blacks. The Kerry Blue Terrier is the national Terrier of Ireland, and they are praised for their playful nature. Kerry Blues are sociable with other animals but can exhibit dominant behaviour around other dogs. These dogs are noted for their intelligence and strong personalities. Measuring 17-20 inches and weighing 30-40 pounds, this mid-sized dog requires a patient, firm master. Kerry Blue Terrier are active dogs and they are extremely agile. They are however, suited to life in an apartment, provided they are given sufficient exercise. This breed is relatively inactive indoors and do not require more than a small yard in addition to daily walks.

Kerry Blues originated in the 18th century in the County of Kerry, Ireland, and was used to hunt small game, retrieve, herding and house guarding. Today they are predominately seen as companions, and in dog competitions, as this breed is excellent at performing tricks. The Kerry Blue Terrier was recognized as a purebred by the AKC in 1924.

They are however, prone to hip dyspiasia, cataracts, hair follicle tumors, and retinal folds dog diseases. Some bloodlines suffer from dry eyes and cysts. Because this breed is prone to ear infections, this breed requires frequent removal of hair and cleaning of the ear canal. Kerrys need to be brushed and bathed about once a week, in addition to the occasional professional cleaning, and trimmed every six weeks. Kerry Blues are light shedders, and are considered hypoallergenic.

While this breed is intelligent and relatively easy to train, Kerrys do require a lot of time and care. In addition to their frequent, time consuming groomings, Kerrys can be stubborn at times and do occasionally ignore their master's commands.

Kerry Blue Terrier Puppies

Nearly all Kerry Blue Terrier Puppies are a solid blackish blue when born, but for most the colours will fade, and a Kerry normally attains its permanent colouring by 18 months. Kerrys are popular in the dog show circuit and for ths reason can be quite costly. It is best to research breeders when looking to purchase this breed. Because Kerrys can be rough with other dogs, they need to be socialized early. Try not to purchase from a breeder who houses dogs individually, and do not take a Kerry home before 8 weeks of age. Kerrys who are brought home before this time are more likely to exhibit behavioural problems and can be more difficult to train.

Although quite the handful at times, Kerrys are wonderful dogs. If you have an active family who is willing to donate sufficient time towards training and grooming, the Kerry is for you. They will protect you and your family and provide you with many years of unconditional love.
