The Kuvasz (pronounced Koo-vas), is also known as the Hungarian Kuvasz and is a beautiful sheepdog, who is normally white - ivory. The Kuvasz is an excellent guard dog, but can be affectionate towards humans. While the Kuvasz is generally patient around children in its family, it can be aggressive with strangers, so precautions should always be taken. The Kuvasz is an extremely independent dog and requires a firm and experienced trainer. The Kuvasz is an active dog and will be extremely unhappy in an apartment or enclosed in a small yard.

The Kuvasz is a large dog, measuring 26-20 inches and weighing 70-115 pounds. These dogs do not respond well to orders and prefer to use their own judgement when making decisions. The Kuvasz is a guard dog by instinct, and is easy to house train but can be quite a handful. This is not the type of dog who will pick up tricks easily, and will not respond to harsh punishments, or over zealous praise. It is recommended employing the help of a professional when training these dogs.

In Turkish, "Kuvasz" means "protector" and is an ancient breed, dating back to the 13th century. In the 15th century, the dog was favoured by King Matyas I, and was often given as royal gifts. The Kuvasz was used as a sheepdog and aided in the hunt of large animals such as bear. Due to interbreeding, the Kuvasz was nearly extinct by the end of the second World War, but has experienced a resurgence in recent years.

Things you need to know before buying the Kuvasz for sale or Kuvasz puppies for sale is that they drool and slobber and are prone to hip dysplasia, skin problems and allergies. This breed can become destructive if cooped up inside and not exercised regularly. Do not chain your Kuvasz up in a yard all day - even with early socialization this breed can be apathetic towards humans and chaining can make the dog vicious. The Kuvasz enjoys cool weather and can live outdoors if provided with a dog house and clean drinking water, but would prefer to spend time indoors as well. This dog has a thick coat and does not like hot weather. If you live in a warm climate, you may want to consider shaving your dog's coat during the summer months.

The Kuvasz should be brushed regularly, about once a week, but should NOT be bathed. Their coats contain special oils which will be stripped away with washing. In lieu of baths, some owners pour talcum powder over their dogs and brush it through the coat. This dog will shed heavily in the summer and lightly in the winter.

If your Kuvasz is to be employed as a farm dog, it needs to be socialized around the animals it will later be expected to guard by 6-7 weeks, with the help of an experienced, older dog who will help in puppy training. Once the Kuvasz has formed a bond with these animals, it will defend them fiercely, not hesitating to attack animals much larger than itself, like wolf or bear. Even with early socialization around humans, the Kuvasz may never be an affectionate dog - although some bloodlines are more sociable than others. Extreme care should always be taken with these dogs, even when they are Kuvasz puppies, and they should never be left unsupervised around strange people or animals.
