Manchester Terriers
Out of all the terrier breeds, the Manchester Terrier is the oldest of the identifiable terrier breeds. In fact, looking back at old books and documents, you can find the Manchester Terriers being talked about doing work as early as the 16th century. Back in 1570, there was a book that came out that was called the Encyclopedia of Dogs, and a Black and tan Terrier is talked about in that book. Although it is said that this doctor was talking about the Manchester Terrier, he does refer to a dog that has a rougher coat and much shorter legs. However, this is just compared to what we are accustomed to today. Over time breeding could have changed the dog slightly.
It was not until around the 1800's that a much more current image of the Manchester Terrier was wrote about. This was a book that was called the Dog In Health and Disease. It was written by a Mr, J. A. Walsh, and there was a full chapter that talked about the black and tan Manchester Terrier. Although his book talked about the more current Manchester Terrier, it is still said that the first books that came out were talking about the same dog as well. One thing that we can see in the Manchester Terriers (which can even be seen in the Manchester Terrier puppies) is their smooth fur coat. They also have a rather deep and wide chest for their size.
In the United States, the Manchester Terrier has actually been divided into two different types. First, there is the toy Manchester Terrier and the standard Manchester Terrier. As you may have guessed, the toy Manchester Terrier is just a lot smaller than the standard one. The funny thing is that both different dog types have about the same personalities. Thus, when talking about the toy Manchester Terrier, you are talking about a small dog that acts big. However, that is a trait that a lot of toy dogs. These dogs are very sweet and make good family dogs. However, they do like to go out and work and play. So if you get one of these dogs, you are going to have to be willing to take it out and play with it.

These dogs are very easy to get along with and pretty easy on dog training as well. These dogs are so much fun to be around that you are never going to want to go anywhere without it. Just remember, sometimes these dogs have a hard time telling the difference between work time and play time. So that is something that you are going to have to train the dog to know. People that work from home usually have a hard time getting anything done, because this dog wants you to play with it all the time. These dogs are very hyper and can go for hours. It is very hard to tire them out. That is why these dogs do make good working dogs as well. If it's not too hot outside, you can put them outside and let them run around for a while; they tend to enjoy that.
