Norwegian Elkhounds

The national dog of Norway just so happens to be the Norwegian Elkhound. This is a dog that has served as many dogs in it's life time. This dog has been both a hunter and a guardian. On top of that, it has also been a herder and a defender. This is a dog that can work in subzero temperatures, because of its thick coat. It can run in deep snow and can even control its running on ice. It can cross over rugged mountains and can even find its way through snow covered forests. This is a breed that can really do it all. Also, as you can tell from what it can do, it's one of the hardiest breeds of dogs in the world. The Norwegian Elkhounds have evolved in such a way that they can be used and trained for just about any kind of job.

The Norwegian Elkhound is a dog that knows no fear. Even when it is outnumbered or facing an enemy that is three times its size, it will not back down. In fact, the Norwegian Elkhounds have been know to hunt things like moose and bears! Of course, their courage is something that can get them hurt at a young age. That is because even the Norwegian Elkhound puppies tend to be a little too big minded for their size. The name, Norwegian Elkhound, is actually a pretty close translation from the actual Norwegian name which is Norsk Elghund. This translates to Norwegian moose dog. In the Norwegian language, moose means elk. Although these dogs may not be able to kill a moose, they sure can keep it at bay. In fact, their job is to keep the moose from running away until the master can get there to shoot it.

As a herding dog the Norwegian Elkhound has been known to fight off things like wolves and bears that may wonder too close to its flock. If the Norwegian Elkhound thinks that its flock is in trouble, it is not unheard of for one of these dogs to run right through a plate glass window to get to their flock. They are very motivated dogs. They feel like if they lose one of their flock, then they have let you down. Also, because of the sharp bark of the Norwegian Elkhounds, they do make great guard dogs as well.

If you are looking for a family dog then start looking for a Norwegian Elkhound for sale or Norwegian Elkhound puppies for sale as it is a very loyal dog, and they make great family dogs. They are very bold and independent, but at the same time, they are very, very playful. If you like to go exploring, then this dog will be so happy to go with you. It's usually happiest to go on a adventure in the cold outdoor weather. It does need daily exercise, or it will become frustrated. Usually, unless this dog has been trained to be a guard dog, is very friendly to strangers. However, it does not like other dogs (at all). If you try and walk one of these dogs on a leash, it tends to want to pull you around. This could be linked back to the fact that some of these dogs use to be dogs that would pull a snow vehicle around for their masters.
