Old English Sheepdogs

Old English Sheepdog, popularly called the Dulux Dog in some places, is famous for herding livestock as well as a family pet. The exact origin of this breed is not known and there are at least three main ideas about its origin: that it is a cross between Barbone and the Deerhound; that it can be traced back to the Briard and the Bergamasco; and that it is a descendant of a hairy Russian breed called the Owtchar that was brought to Great Britain. In any case, it is clear that the farmers in England's West Country developed Old English Sheepdog as a dog trained in driving cattle and herding sheep. First shown in Britain in 1873, it was widely used in the 19th

century in agricultural areas.

Physical Features

The most famous and readily noticeable feature of Old English Sheepdog is its shaggy grey and white fur that thoroughly covers its body, including its eyes. It is a large dog, 20-24 inches high, with a well-proportioned body, straight forelegs with small and round feet, and a characteristic topline sloping upward from the withers to the loin. The head is large and rather square in shape with small, flat ears, and a large, black nose. Old English Sheepdog has blue or brown eyes or, in some dogs, one of each color. Blue, gray, blue-gray, and blue-merle are the desirable colors for the coat of Old English Sheepdog. Most Old English Sheepdogs weigh 27 to 29 kg but some get as weighty as 45 kg. Their litter usually ranges in size from 5 to 10 Old English Sheepdog puppies.

Temperament

Once considered fierce and untrustworthy, Old English Sheepdog puppies is now seen as a gentle and lovable, teddy bear type of dog. It is not only intelligent and faithful but also protective and often uses its herding instinct to herd family members, especially kids. While it is quite fond of human company, it also needs some time alone. Sometimes, it may behave rather willfully. With its bark sounding like a cracked bell, Old English Sheepdog makes a good family dog as it prefers to stay close to its household and loves its owner family. Above all, it is excessively fond of playing and brings mutual happiness to children in the family.
