Otterhounds

A very old British dog breed would have to be that of the Otterhound. This is a hound that happens to be the ancestor of the Bloodhound. So you can see how far the life of the Otterhound has to go back. They are also one of the ancestors of the Airedale Terriers as well. These are great dogs that have a great combination of characteristics. They love to be on both land and water. These dogs, because they spend so much time in water, actually have kind of a oily coat. This helps the water to roll off the back of them while they are swimming. They also have webbed feet that makes these dogs very quick swimmers. This is a trait that kind of developed over the years.

If you could not tell by the name of the Otterhound, the Otterhounds hunt Otter. These dogs use to hunt otter, but this does not happen anymore. That is because, in 1978, it became illegal to kill otters in Britain. Now these dogs are used to hunt things like mink and coypu. Even the young Otterhound puppies are very good hunters. This is something that just comes naturally to most hounds. However, it's a good thing, because these dogs do not live a very long life. Most of them only live about 10 years, which is pretty short when you compare their life span to other dogs their size. Some of the very oldest ones have been said to live to the age of 15, but this is very rare.

These are great family dogs, and they can jump a fence that stands about five feet high. This is just something that you should keep in mind when you get one of these dogs. These dogs are pretty sweet, and like most hounds, they develop a very close bond with their masters. If you want not only a hunting dog but a best friend, then you can buy the Otterhounds for sale or Otterhound puppies for sale. These are dogs that you are never going to want to live without. However, if you want one of these dogs, you better act now. That is because they are endangered.

There are only about 1000 Otterhounds left in the whole world, this includes puppies as well. They say that only about 350 to 400 live in the United States. In 2006, in Britain (where they got their start), only 51 of these dogs were born. This is bad when you think that there are usually five or so dogs a litter, which means only about 10 Otterhounds gave birth in all of Britain. In fact, the Otterhound, in 2008, is now ranked higher on the endangered list than the Giant Panda that has been on the list for years. Pandas are only born every few years, and they still outnumber the Otterhounds. So if you get a chance to have one of these dogs, take good care of it. This is a type of animal that may not be around much longer. So we will only be able to remember what these animals were like. As they die off, there will be nothing left of them, but a spot in our history.
