Pekingeses

The Pekingese (or "Pek" for short)is a beautiful dog with long, flowing hair and large eyes. They are noted for their bravery, sensitivity and independence. Peks are often referred to as "Lion Dogs", and are also called Dogs of Foo by the Chinese The Pekingese is extremely affectionate and intelligent, but may be difficult to housebreak. Peksare suited toapartment life, but have a strong instinct to walk (some have been known to walk up to 4 miles a day), and require daily exercise. Peks that are under exercised can become destructive and moody.

The Pekingese breed is over 2000 years old and has hardly changed during that time. They originated in China in the city of Peking, and were most likely developed by crossing dogs with Asian wolves. The Pekingese made its debut in Britain in 1893, and was recognized as a purebred in 1909.

Pekingese require daily combing, with special attention paid to the behind (this area can easily become matted and tangled). Females shed their undercoats in warm weather, while males do not. Peks of both sexes require regular shampoos, and the eyes and face need to be cleaned daily to avoid infection. Grass, burs and leaves can easily become tangled in a Pek's coat, especially around the feet, so make sure to check this area daily. Peks are average shedders and are small dogs, measuring 6-9 inches and weighing 8-10 pounds. Peks under 6 pounds are called "Sleeve Pekingese" and are the most popularvariation of this breedin China.

Pekingese

Healthy Pekshave a long lifespan, normally 10-15 years.Peks tend to have difficulty giving births and often require Cesarean Sections. They are prone to breathing and heart problems (the leading cause of deaths for Peks is heart failure), as well as Trichaiasis, a sometimes painful disorder which causes the eyelashes to grow backwards, touching the eyeballs. Peks tend to catch colds quickly, so try to keep them out of extreme hot and cold weather and away from damp areas.

Although Peks appear to be delicate and lazy, they are extremely athletic dogs. Peks have short, bowed legs - originally incorporated into their breeding to prevent them from wandering - and has contributed to their signature style of walking and running.

Pekingese Puppies

Be careful before buying Pekingese puppies for sale or Pekingese for sale as they are extremely delicate, so they are not suited towards rough children. While these dogs are intelligent, they can be difficult to housebreak and sometime have difficulty staying focused. Crate training is recommended for these dogs. Exercise puppies regularly and feed a few small meals a day instead of one large meal for dog diet. Peks tend to bond with one person in the family, and will look to their owner to set boundaries. When looking for a breeder make sure potentials have all the right papers and health certifications. There has been a recent serge in popularity in toy dogs like the Pekingese, which has led some breeders to irresponsibly mate. Choosing a responsible breeder will ensure the health of your puppy and save you a lot of money, effort and worry.
