Pharaoh Hounds

The iconic Pharaoh Hound, often depicted in ancient Egyptian artwork, is one of the world oldest dog breeds, having originated sometime around 3,500 B.C. It is an athletic, sleek looking dog with a pleasant demeanour. Pharaoh Hounds (or, as they are known in Malta, the Kelb Tal-Fenek) are generally calm and are not difficult to train but can be prone to timidity, which can easily be curbed by early socialization. Pharaoh Hounds are excellent runners and love to chase small animals, so they should always be leashed in public.

Measuring 21-25 inches and weighing 45-55 pounds, Pharaoh hounds are mid-sized "escape artists" - they are very good at jumping and can easily clear fences. Pharaoh hounds are sensitive to the cold and require a warm bed for sleeping. They should not be put outside at night, especially in cooler climates. This breed will do OK in an apartment, but has a primal instinct to run. Pharaohs require a lot of exercise, in the form of walks and long runs in enclosed spaces. This breed is an average shedder and is extremely easy to groom, requiring only the occasional bath and brush.

The Pharaoh Hound was only recognized as a purebred by the AKC in 1983, despite the antiquity of the breed. In ancient times, Pharaoh hounds were used to hunt game and were treasured companions of Egyptian Pharaohs. Today, many Maltese farmers proudly employ these dogs. The Pharaoh hound was declared the national dog of Malta in 1974 and in 1977, Maltese lira coins were released featuring an image of the dog. Pharaoh Hounds made their debut in England and the United States in the 1960s.

Pharaoh Hounds

If you have bought Pharaoh hounds for sale it will have an average lifespan of 13 years. This breed is normally very healthy but can be sensitive to some medicines and insecticides. Pharaoh Hounds are highly trainable but some have an independent streak, and they generally do not respond well to harsh criticism. This breed has above average sight, hearing and sense of smell, and a powerful jaw. When Pharaohs are excited they "blush" - their ears and nose turn red. Although this breed is generally good with other dogs, males sometimes exhibit dominant behaviour around other male dogs. Pharaoh Hounds are fearless and headstrong and are not afraid to put up a fight.

Pharaoh Hound Puppies

Due to the stubborn nature of this breed, dog obedience training is a must. Even the best trained Pharaohs sometimes take their own initiative and ignore the commands of their master. Ideally, sessions should be kept short and fun. This dog will not respond well to harsh words and learns best in a stress-free environment. Socialization should begin early. Your Pharaoh Hound will be ready to come home with you by eight weeks of age. While the dog will be able to eat on its own before this time, it is not ready to leave its mother and siblings until it is two months old. Do not buy Pharaoh Hound puppies for sale younger than this home, even if your breeder gives his or her consent.
