The Red and White Setter has a life expectancy of 10 to 13 years.

Origin
Many people believe the Red and White Setter is simply a type of Irish Setter, but the Red and White Setter is a distinct, separate breed. In fact, the Red and White Setter is thought to be the older of the two breeds.

The Red and White Setter was developed in Ireland around the end of the 17th century. Much of the breed’s history has been lost to time, however it is believed the Red and White Setter descended from the Spaniel, brought over from either Spain or France. The Red and White Setter was used extensively for hunting and remains quite skilled at the job today.  

Size
The Red and White Setter weighs 50 to 75 pounds and measures 22.5 to 26 inches.

Grooming Needs
The Red and White Setter has a fine, flat coat accented by feathering on the ears, throat, chest, underbelly, legs and tail, and between the toes. The Red and White Setter is an average shedder and should be brushed daily and bathed occasionally. If being shown, the Red and White Setter’s coat can be lightly trimmed for a neater appearance.

Like all dogs, the Red and White Setter also needs basic grooming. Brush their teeth, clean their ears and trim their nails on a regular basis.

Temperament
The Red and White Setter has boundless energy for the hunt. When in the field or water, the Red and White Setter is determined, bold and highly alert. They are among the most natural of hunting dogs.

The Red and White Setter is as energetic at home as they are outdoors. This breed likes to stay busy and is not for couch potatoes. However, the more exercise the Red and White Setter gets, the more laidback and calm they are in the home.

The Red and White Setter is kind and friendly, welcoming just about everyone. They get along well with children, new people and other dogs. Red and White Setters crave attention and are happiest when they can be around their family. Although strong and powerful, Red and White Setters enjoy playing the role of lapdog. They love to give and receive affection.  

Training Needs
The Red and White Setter is intelligent and easy to train. The Red and White Setter responds best to consistency and lots of positive reinforcement. Once they understand the basics, Red and White Setters can make great participants in agility, obedience, tracking and rally.

Activity Level
The Red and White Setter is a natural hunting dog that needs regular exercise. The athletic Red and White Setter is best suited for an active family and can make a great jogging, hiking or biking companion. At the very least, the Red and White Setter needs a long daily walk and lots of time outside in a large, secure area to run around and play.
