Saint Bernards

Saint Bernards are wonderful, affectionate dogs who can have either rough or smooth white coats, with tan, red, brindle, black and mahogany markings. Despite their large size (this breed normally measures 26-28 inches and weighs 110-200 pounds); Bernards are incredibly gentle, patient, and good with children. Saint Bernards are extremely easy to train, but obedience lessons should begin while the dog is still small. Surprisingly, Bernards will do OK in an apartment, as they are fairly inactive indoors. They do, however, require daily exercise. Bernards can be housed outside, but prefer to be with people. Saint Bernards do not require frequent groomings and only shed twice a year, but they do tend to shed quite a bit. They should be brushed occasionally with a firm bristle brush, and wash only when necessary. They do not like heat and humidity.

A cross between an ancient Masitff, Great Dane and a Great Pyreness, the Saint Bernard was first developed around 980 AD by Saint Bernard de Menthon to rescue travelers who ran into trouble crossing the Alpines between Italy and Switzerland. Saint Bernards have a keen sense of smell - they can detect a human buried beneath layers of snow - and are extremely good at predicting oncoming natural disasters like avalanches, possibly due to their ability to detect low frequency sounds. In the 17th century, Saint Bernards were first used as search and resuce dogs in avalance hotspots. It is estimated they have rescued more than 2,000 humans to date.

Saint Bernards

If you are buying a Saint Bernards for sale, a good thing about them is that they are generally healthy, but can sometimes develop heart, skin and stomach problems, as well as hip dysplasia and extropion. Bernards tend to bloat when fed large meals, so feed them two or three small meals a day. Bernards tend to drool after drinking, eating, and sometimes while sleeping.

Because Saint Bernards grow very fast they can experience bone deterioration if not fed and exercised properly. While exercise and proper nutrition is important for all breeds, it is crucial for the Saint Bernard.

Saint Bernards are noted for their intelligence and strength. They are very dependable work dogs and enjoy being busy. Today, Saint Bernards frequently participate and excel in obedience, tracking, agility and weight pulling competitions.

Saint Bernard Puppies

Puppies should be exercised frequently, but not overworked. This is particularly important for this fast-growing breed - too much exercise can hinder the development of a puppy's bones. Before bringing your puppy home, talk to your vet about proper nutrition. Saint Bernards require calcium and other supplements to make their bones strong - not all food formulated for "big dogs" will provide the right nutrition. Plan to begin obedience training right from the start. Saint Bernards are highly trainable dogs who aim to please, and teaching them not to pull on a leash or jump on people will be relatively easy, but becomes more difficult with age. Also, because puppies grow extremely fast, the puppy is only a manageable size for a short amount of time. Saint Bernards puppies for sale are ready to leave their mothers around eight weeks of age, and by this point are already larger than some full grown dogs.

Despite their size, Saint Bernards are easily adaptable to various living conditions. They are patient, friendly, and make excellent watchdogs. They truly are a joy to be around, and will fit wonderfully into most families.
