Salukis

Saluki is one of the oldest breed of domesticated dogs, dating back to as far as 7000 years. Scientific research on the DNA analysis of the breed also reveals that it is one of the earliest descendants of wolves. There is evidence that Salukis were mummified in ancient Egypt. The first regular breeders of Saluki, however, were the Arabs who knew it as a speedy hunting dog. While dogs are generally disliked in Muslim cultures, Saluki enjoys immense popularity and fondness among Muslims, especially Arabs. In 1840, Salukis were introduced in England. At the turn of the 20th century, they were bred in the USA and became quite popular.

Physical Features

Saluki is characterized by a unique grace, symmetry, and an athletic spirit. Its stamina, agility, and endurance are exceptional among all sight hounds. In good physical condition, Salukis attain a running speed of 50-60 miles, maintaining it for about five miles. Complete grace and perfect balance are the defining qualities of this long-cherished breed. Another unique feature of Saluki is their unusual gait when they are chasing/running at top speed, i.e. all four legs are in the air at once. The body is slim like

Greyhound, though more elongated with oblique shoulders and the head is narrow and well-proportioned. The feet are thick-haired and the coat varies in color.

Temperament

Saluki is an intelligent and sensitive dog. It generally tends to retain its hunting mood, remaining rather reserved or aloof. Salukis should undergo dog training in brief and varied sessions since they get bored with long, repetitive sessions. Also, they should not be trained by using hard-handed methods. While chasing a prey, they usually don't tend to their owner's call. Indoors, Saluki tends to be a quiet dog and won't bark unless there is some reason. However, Salukis frequently `sing' in a high pitched howl, expressing that something is wrong (including the absence of a family member). They usually get along with children and are not aggressive toward dogs but they should not be left off leash when there are other animals around, especially cats and other small pets. The litter size of this breed mostly contains 5 to 7 Saluki puppies, though a litter of ten is also not uncommon.Be sure before buying Saluki puppies for sale or Saluki for sale as they are generally not recommended for apartment life.

The life expectancy of Salukis is 10 to 12 years. Saluki usually does great on the health front, except for its higher sensitivity to anesthesia. This is because of a low level of body fat that is characteristic of the breed. Some Salukis are prone to cancer and a few eye dog diseases. Also, they may suffer from sunburn, especially on their nose. A lot of exercise is needed to keep them healthy and fit. The coat of Saluki is easy to groom with a common comb or hair brush.
