Schipperkes

It cannot be said with certainty that a Schipperke (pronounced skipper-kee), is a distinct breed, or can be classified as a terrier miniature sheep dog or spitz. This is due to the long standing and continuous debate on its breed classification. However, what is known about this small, Belgian dog is that it originated during the early 16th century. Some reports suggest that Schipperkes were often found aboard barges in the Belgian canals around the 1800s and thus earned them the title `Belgian barge dogs'. Moreover, with their affinity to water and boats, the English gave them the title - `Little captain' exactly as the name Schipperke reads in translation. Here's some information that will throw light on the Schipperke, the little Belgian dog with a big heart.

What do Schipperkes look like?

First of all, this breed is small in stature and generally all-black in color. It has a rather `foxy' looking face, bright brown eyes and upright, pointed ears. A Schipperke has a short and sturdy body and a tail that curls back over it. In the U.S., the tails of Schipperke puppies are docked, however, in most countries of Europe, tails are left untouched. Schipperkes weigh between 12-16 lbs. and are approximately 10-13 inches tall. A highly visible feature of this dog is its alert demeanor and intelligent expression.

What are the character and traits of a Schipperke?

If you have bought a Schipperke for sale or Schipperke puppies for sale you will realise they are highly alert and extremely energetic dog. They possess the same curiosity as cats which probably demonstrate the hunting instinct of the dog. Schipperkes are also fearless and independent and won't hesitate to take on a dog twice their size. They are extremely loyal to their masters and being playful, love to be around children. A Schipperke makes an excellent watchdog, as it will bark at anything that moves. However, it also displays friendly tendencies once it will get to know strangers. As Schipperkes are of average intelligence, they may not be easy to break or train at home. Schipperke puppies, on the other hand, can be molded to become good family dogs.

Are Schipperkes healthy?

Because it is such an active dog, a Schipperke can live up to 18 years. It does not have any dog health problem in particular. However, if they are not exercised, overfed, or not given enough freedom or space to play or move around in, they may suffer from heart, digestive, joint and skeletal problems. Therefore, regular exercise, balanced diet and periodic veterinarian checkups can ensure a long, healthy and active life.

How can I own a Schipperke?

Your very first step is to learn as much as you can about this breed. Schipperke puppies can, of course be purchased from reputed Schipperke breeders, or adopted from a Schipperke rescue center. It's a good idea to get them young, as they'll be easier to train and will adapt perfectly to your family and home environment.

As with any breeds of dogs, a Schipperke may have its own set of negative and positive points, but with a little patience, you may not be disappointed with this dog, in fact, you may be truly happy you chose a Schipperke over other dogs in its class.
