Skye Terriers

Skye Terries are one of the most known forms of terriers in the world. What most people do not know is that there are at least two different histories behind the Skye Terrier. People use to accept the fact that the origin of the Skye Terrier was started at a centuries old shipwreck. The story goes something like this. In the 1600's, there was a Spanish shipwreck on the Isle of Skye in the area of the Scottish Hebrides. Some of the survivors of the shipwreck where the Maltese dogs. These Maltese dogs were then said to have mated with the local terriers. This, of course, lead to a very different breed of Terriers altogether. Of course, there were some texts that were found a few decades before the shipwreck that pretty much described the modern day Skye Terriers. This has proven that the modern Skye terriers existed well before the Maltese ever made it to the Isle of Skye.

Of course, just because the Skye terrier puppies did not come from Maltese in the beginning, it's hard to not see the fact that the Skye terriers did inherit some of the characteristics of the Maltese. It is also believed by some that the Sky terrier was a cross between the Celtic terriers and the Swedish Vallhund of the Vikings. This would have happened when the Vikings invaded that area. If this would have been the case, then the Viking dogs would have mated with the Sky terriers long before the Maltese ever got there as well. That makes both of these stories very true.

From the time that the Sky Terrier puppies are born, they have very short legs. Whenever you have your own Skye Terriers, you will see that there are some particular health concerns that you may want to worry about. The most known dog health problem of the Skye terrier is the Skye limp, or puppy limp. This happens when there is premature closure of the distal radial growth plate. This can happen if the Sky terriers are exercised too often when they are too young (usually within the first eight months). They then damage the bone growth in their legs, and this leaves them with a very bad and painful limp. If they get this problem, things like jumping up and down from objects or even just walking for a long time, will hurt the dog a lot. The best way to avoid this is to not exercise the dog too much within the first eight to ten months.

It is good to buy Sky terriers for sale or Skye terrier puppies for sale as it is a very sweet breed, and it usually lives to be about 12 to 15 years old. In the latter years of their life, you need to start looking out for mammary cancer in the Skye terrier. This is the leading cause of death to these dogs. That is why it is very important to pay attention to these dogs and have them looked at. These dogs can live very long lives and be very happy and outgoing. They are small dogs, and they love to be lap dogs.
