Standard Schnauzers

Measuring 17-20 inches and weighing 30-45 pounds, this lively dog is fearless and lively. He will protect your family without hesitation, and he is a fast and intelligent learner. The Standard Schnauzer is easily identified by his long beard and wiry coat. He comes in either salt and pepper (flecks of black and white) or in a deep solid black. The Standard Schnauzer has a true terrier personality - he is playful, yappy, and an excellent companion. While this breed does well with children, he is not a fan of roughhousing and is happiest around mature children.

The Standard Schnauzer is suited to apartment life, but loves (and thrives) on exercise. These dogs never seem to grow tired. In addition to walks, Standard Schnauzers love to run around in an enclosed space. Large yards and/or dog parks are perfect for this. Because of their lively personality, Standard Schnauzers require a dominant owner who isn't afraid to take charge. This breed is very excitable and can become destructive if not properly trained and disciplined.

The Standard Schnauzer originated in Germany and is named after the German word Schnauze, meaning "muzzle". Standard Schnauzers have been in famed company over the years - both Rembrandt and Durer owned the dogs and featured them in selected artworks. During World War I they were used as messengers, and were often used on farms to catch rodents. This breed has excellent watchdog abilities and, with proper dog training, can be used to guard and retriever sheep and other livestock. Today, this breed is often found in the dog show ring and actively competing in obedience competitions. This breed of Schnauzer excels in watch dogging, hunting and retrieving, and agility.

Standard Schnauzers

Standard Schnauzers are generally healthy; most bloodlines suffer from little to no diseases or genetic disorders, and have the longer than average lifespan of 15 years. This breed requires a daily brush to prevent matting. Sometimes, even with this, hair can become tangled and clumps will need to be trimmed out. Standard Schnauzers only require baths on an "as-needed" basis and need a professional grooming twice a year. Clean out the ears regularly and make sure the hair around the eyes is kept short, to avoid irritation.

Standard Schnauzer Puppies

Before you buy Standard Schnauzer puppies for sale or Standard Schnauzers for sale you need to know that despite their enthusiasm and seemingly abundant energy, Standard Schnauzer puppies cannot walk and run at the same capacity of an adult. When exercising your pup, make sure to give him lots of time to rest and do not try to get him to walk or run long distances. Too much exercise can cause damage to his still-developing skeleton, which can lead to joint problems later on in life. Because of the protective nature of this breed, it is important to socialize early, especially if there are other pets in the home. This breed may exert dominant behaviour (and even attack) other animals if he feels they pose a threat. Although this breed learns quickly, it has an independent streak, so a firm "take charge" approach is required for obedience training. When properly trained and developed, Standard Schnauzers make wonderful pets. To ensure this you may want to employ the help of a professional.
