Although by the sound of its name, you would think that the Tibetan Terrier would be in the terrier group, but it is not. This is a name that was given to the dog by Europeans that traveled to Tibet. When they saw this breed they where reminded of terriers back home. The origins of this dog is not clear, however, a lot of people do claim that the dog was a temple dog. Others say that the dog was a farm dog. Whether or not we will ever know the truth is not yet clear.
The Tibetan Terrier is very smart, and thus, it has many different uses. It can be a guard dog, a herd dog, or just a plain old companion dog. These dogs are very easy going, and they do make wonderful house dogs. No matter what you train these dogs to be, you have to start them off as Tibetan Terrier puppies. It is easier to train them this way. These dogs are very shaggy looking, and their name in Tibet is actually Tsang Apso, or the bearded dog. Although these dogs can make it indoors, they like to be outdoors and many people never bring these dogs inside. No matter what the weather is, they are usually just fine outside. This dog may not be well known today, but after doing recent DNA tests on the dog, the Tibetan Terrier is said to be one of the most ancient dog breeds in the world.

They are a great family dogs, and they love their owner very much. They are very gentle with children, and they are very sensitive dogs. This is not in their nature. These dogs are very energetic, but they are suitable for apartment living. They are very strong as well, but at first look you would not think they are.
