Welsh Springer Spaniels

Measuring 16-19 inches and weighing 25-45 pounds, the Wlesh Springer Spaniel (also known as the "Welshie") is a mid-sized dog with a beautiful, dark red and white coat. They are happy, enthusiastic dogs, but can be timid around strangers. Welsh Springer Spaniels love to be around the family and would not be happy chained up in a yard all day. This dog has deep-rooted hunting instincts and may have a tendency to wander, although this can be curbed through dog obedience training beginning at six months of age. Welsh Springer Spaniels can live quite nicely in an apartment, provided they receive sufficient exercise, and will get along with children and other pets. Ifunder exercised , this breed will gain weight quickly and may start to exhibit behavioural problems. Although this breed is a quick learner, it does have anindependent streak and will, from time to time, ignore commands and/or become easily distracted. While it may not be possible to completely eradicate this behaviour, it can be minimized through obedience training.

The Welsh Springer Spaniel originated in Wales, sometime in the 13th century. Welshies were bred to be gun dogs and are noted for their stamina and ability to work in a variety of environments. They are named "Springers" because they excel at "springing" out game. Welshies excel at hunting, retrieving and watch dogging. This breed made its debut in the United States in the 19th century and was recognized by the AKC in 1906. Welshies were often employed by hunters and were, at times, used on farms to hunt vermin. Today, they are commonly found in the dog show ring and as household companions.

Welsh Springer Spaniels require little grooming, and only need to be washed and bathed as necessary, however, special attention should be paid to the ears. They need to be cleaned out regularly to avoid infection/. This breed is considered an average shedder.

Welsh Springer Spaniels

Welsh Springer Spaniels are hardy animals, suffering only from hip dysplasia and the occasional ear infection, although some bloodlines are prone to epilepsy and entropion dog diseases. The average lifespan for this breed is 12-15 years. With proper training, Welshies make wonderful family additions. Their adaptable coat allows them to be comfortable in both warm and cool climates, and they take pride in pleasing their family and masters.

Welsh Springer Spaniel Puppies

Before you buy a Welsh Springer Spaniels for sale or Welsh Springer Spaniel Puppies for sale you need to know they are incredibly inquisitive and get distracted easily. Training must begin immediately and should be well enforced by six months of age. Although extremely intelligent, these dogs have an independent streak, which can spell disaster if not properly trained. When bored or under exercised, undisciplined Welshies can be destructive. Do not criticize too harshly and make sure to give your Welshie a lot of positive praise. Also try to socialize your dog around strangers because they do have a tendency to be shy and at times, unpredictable. Do not leave your Welsh Springer Spaniel unattended around new people and animals until you are sure the dog can be trusted.
